I'm trying to keep an eye on my carbs and sugars. I've had Fit Day software for years. Here's what I ate today:
Calories: 1099
Protein: 94 grams or 34 percent.
Fat: 45 grams 36 percent
Fiber: 15 grams
Carbs: 86 grams or 28 percent
I have a feeling I've eaten too many carbs. I'm not going to test my glucose until the morning.

If i remember correctly when I was first diagnosed and finding my way I think my fastings were in the 130+ range. since i didnt get a meter until 3 weeks after diagnosis i have no idea how high they were then, and I WAS eating very little, since i think i went down about 20 pounds in that 3 week period.
I couldnt remember if glucopage was the trade name or if that was a combo med. But i was prettys sure it had metformin in it. was concerned becuase if she takes that without any food she will have even worse tummy troubles.
I know this is like singing to the choir MaryFrances but I agree! too many diabetics are diagnosed without the doctor or nurse or anyone sitting them down and explaining things to them. ACTUALLY i WISH they would do the same thing with prediabetic people also! Especially since so often then a little information could prevent a number from going on to full blown diabetes!!
Although on the good side the doctor did get her a meter and does have appointment in only a few weeks. my first drs appointment after being diagnosed was i think 3 months out, with doctor saying the diabetic educator would tell me everything.
i have learned over the years this is a disease where WE are steering the ship, and if we don't look at the map, we are sure to get stuck on a sandbar or something!!!
I will say my doctor has never faulted me for bringing too much info to the appointments. by the time I saw at the first 3 month one, I had a lot of info, and a lot was from this board and that book i keep mentioning!! I think sometimes my doctor is surprised by how good my numbers are and how much I do to keep them there!
The lowest I seem to be able to get my sugar is 131. I see an endocrinologist soon. I am very angry about this diagnosis. This disease is expensive, time consuming, requires constant vigilance, and is not at all fun! I know it is not the worst thing in the world, but the thought of dealing with this forwever makes me mad. Food is one of my few treats, and now I have to monitor all that. I think I already have some nerve damage in my foot (lots of foot things going on). I have the start of glaucoma and the dietician said I will probably need insulin. I was OK until February and then stopped being careful, and BAM! my sugars are way out of control.
Thanks for sharing the name of that book!
That is the book I keep mentioning it too. With the various chapters she basically takes you step by step through what happens. She also has a sense of humor and is very good at explaining the various terms and tests. I think she even covered what some people go through if their numbers go down really quickly and they start thinking, well maybe i am NOT a diabetic!!
She has since written a book for prediabetics which I have heard is also very good!
I will also say, she was diagosed not very long ago herself so she really relates to the things we go through when getting diagnosed. That makes it even more helpful I think.
I confess I have eaten things I should not, and I do use food as a treat sometimes, but I have tried to focus on the healthier ones. Like buying FRESH raspberries from Target even in the winter when they are NOT cheap! I try to focus on those new, fresh and healthy ones that it is easy to say, no I won't spend that much money on a small box of berries!! In the middle of winter THAT really IS a TREAT!!
I suspect any diabetic who says they have NEVER cheated is probably deluding themselves. It happens, but does NO GOOD to sit there and kick yourself or dwell on it. IT is done, you cant change it but you can focus on what you do in the future.

What a wonderful simile! I'll try to remember this one. It is also too true.
I took my first A1C test 7/31 and got the results today.

Amy,
This is not bad. You are meeting the national goals and you will see improvement as the metformin does its work. So expect improvement the ext time you ahve your test done. You can see changes from the metformin for up to 8 weeks. You also start on a lower dose and the dose can be increased as you need it to be.
I hope you are over the initial upsets as you start metformin.
Well, Amy, not bad for your first a1c!!!
Switch to Calorie Countdown low fat milk. No sugar. It used to be called Carb Countdown but they changed the name without changing the way it is made.
