Breakfast suggestions??

Hi,

I'm doing fairly well with managing my diabetes, but am having a difficult time with breakfast. Before the diabetes I would just skip it, but I know I shouldn't do that. If I eat only fruit I'm starving by lunch, but everything else I would normally cook for breakfast really is not good for a diabetic. I would really appreciate a few suggestions.

Thanks

I understand, I had to stop eating oat meal and cream of wheat, which is what I would eat every morning. That or cereal. Here is what I do instead...

Eggs, (fried, scrambled or omeletes) have no carbs.
Ham, Bacon, Sausage are good for filling you up and no carbs. Good protein.
I like to make breakfast sandwiches:
A whole wheat English muffin, toasted with butter
A fried egg, slice of ham and slice of cheese. It makes a yummy sandwich and it really fills me up.

Good luck!

Those are great suggestions but be careful with eggs and cholesterol. I use egg beaters or egg whites.

Molly,

Has the doctor told you how many carbs you are supposed to eat for breakfast? Usually it is around 30 grams. So you can have toast, or cereal and milk. For example 1 slice of toast is usually 18 grams and 1/2 cup of milk is 7 grams of carbs to equal 25 grams of carbs. Depending upon the cereal you can have 1 serving. Try cereals like Fiber One because they don't have added sugar in them. You also need 1 protein which can be cottage cheese, an egg, 1 tbsp of peanut butter, etc.

I hope these suggestions help you. You are correct that you need to eat breakfast as this is really the most important meal of the day.

Here is an article which will help you:

A good suggestion is 2 Special K waffles and 1 small "over easy" egg. Tastes good, is fast, and helps keep you going all morning.

My breakfast consists of a bowl (1 cup) of Cheerios (just plain or whole grain) frozen blue berries or strawberries or banana with 2% milk. I have at least 8 oz of milk or Instant Oatmeal (no sugar) and a fruit. I do add "I can't believe it's not butter"to the oatmeal. My sugar is good. I do eat things that I am not suppose to eat at times but try to "get back in line" as soon as I can. I am wondering if I do that because I have cooked from "scratch" all my life and I don't have to cook now and I don't cook much.

Hi Emily,

Welcome to the board. How many carbs are you supposed to be eating for breakfast? I ask because you have a lot of carbs in what you are eating even though it is all a good selection for a healthy breakfast.

i usually have a small bowl of grits or oatmeal and friut. some days i do have eggs and toast with fruit. mostly i eat bananas in the morning for the potassium because i have problems with terrible cramping in my feet.

no one ever told me how many carbs i should have for any meal. i was told once that you shouldn't go over 45 carbs at any meal.

Ellen,

30-45 grams is what you usually see diabetics being recommended for breakfast. 1 cup of milk has 12 grams of carbs, 1/2 cup of grits has 16 grams and 1/2 cup of oatmeal has 13 grams. In general fruits have 15 grams per serving and the serving size for a banana is 1/2 of the banana.

The question is what is your blood sugar two hours after eating? You want it to be no more than 40 points above what it was before you started eating or less than 140 if at all possible. You may not be getting enough protein in your usual breakfast to be able to smooth out you blood sugar readings. If this is the case you have two choices: increase the amount of protein and/or decrease the number of carbs.

So please test your blood sugar and see what it is. Since your doctor has you on such tight control I am sure he wants your 2 hour post prandial (eating) blood sugar to be 140 or less.

Did you look at this article? If not please do so.

Good afternoon to you and thank you. I do not count carbs, My doctor specializes in diabetes, etc and she turned me loose for 1 year. I eat healthy and check my sugar regularly. I know what will raise my sugar and so I don't eat it. I have learned a lot just by paying attention to what I eat and what it does to my sugar. I test two hours (or less) after meals. That will tell me what is going on better than fasting, but you certainly need to know what your numbers are when fasting. If I have success with testing at fasting for a long time and testing in the middle of the night I will get a very good picture of what I need. I eat a lot of raw and steamed veggies and fruits. What I eat depends on what my readings are. The only meat I eat is chicken breast and lean beef. When I counted carbs I found myself only having about 2 to 3 a meal so I stopped that. Do I eat what is bad for me? Yep sometimes but not very often. My sugar usually runs 111-131 (the suggested range is 160-180) somewhere in that range 2 hours or less after eating and that is with my "cherrios breakfast". What sort of food do you eat? If I feel like I am not getting enough of something a particular food offers then I eat that for a while and watch my sugar. It is great to find out about other choices. Thank you
