Breakfast suggestions??

Hi,

I'm doing fairly well with managing my diabetes, but am having a difficult time with breakfast. Before the diabetes I would just skip it, but I know I shouldn't do that. If I eat only fruit I'm starving by lunch, but everything else I would normally cook for breakfast really is not good for a diabetic. I would really appreciate a few suggestions.

Thanks

Emily,

I typed a long message to you and my blasted computer froze up and I couldn't send it! So I am now on my husband's computer and I have to start over again!

You highlight one of the reasons that we need to test our blood sugars after eating. My husband, who is also diabetic, can't eat rice because it raises his blood sugar too much. I have a problem with potatoes but not rice. Neither of us would know this if we didn't test after eating. All of us react differently to foods and it is important for us to learn, as you have done, what we can and can't eat.

I used to count exchanges but I was switched to counting carbs three year ago because I am on Symlin and I must have 30 grams of carbs or I can't take my medicine. I can switch back and forth between the two systems with ease. It doesn't really matter to me which one is used.

It was good to hear from you. I don't eat between meals at all. I am on Metformin now. When I was on Amaryl I had to eat between meals and twice a night. I kept a jar of peanut butter and candy by my bed every night. I went so low I just didn't have it in me to get to the kitchen. I have been as low as 35 in the midde of the night. I barely could get the spoon of peanut butter in my mouth. Scarey stuff, that was. I changed doctors and did a turn around. I have lost 70 lbs over a 2 1/2 year peroid. I have not been on a diet because I always have gained it back and diets don't work for me. So I changed my way of eating. Sound good? I have a problem with eating when I get home. I don't cook for a family anymore and am tired when I do get home. I have severe arthritis in my leg; caused by a wreck years ago so the leg is elevated and packed in ice as soon as I can do it. It is so tempting to just eat junk food. I must say I am giving in to that more and more and it must stop! I always had Healthy Choice for supper and sometimes for lunch but my doctor took me off of that because of the salt content (bummer!). I was loosing weight doing what I was doing but I haven't lost any weight for a while. I refuse to weight myself because I refused to make an issue of it because it leads to me over eating even more. My sugar continues to be good inspite of the battle I am facing now. Merry-go-round? Yep that's where I am now. I am off for the weekend now and hopefully will explore the web site and get a lot of quilting done. Look forward to hearing from you again. p.s. I hope this makes sense, when I get home I am "brain dead" for a while.

Emily,

I am a lot like you! I work so hard and when I get home I am too tired to cook much. On the weekends I try to cook something that I can eat as a left over during the week. I am not organized enough to plan meals and freeze them. I also spend too much time on the computer in the evenings!

We don't call it a diabetic diet anymore because it is really a life change and a diet is something you go on and off of. In fact it is called medical nutritional therapy and should be prescribed by physicians when they first see the newly diagnosed diabetic. This is as important as any meds that they can prescribe. I love veggies and I just try to make sure that I get enough of them. Right now I am eating green beans and two different kinds of tomatoes out of my garden. My cherry tomatoes tonight tasted wonderful!

Congratulations on your weight loss. I am sure that makes you feel better in more than one way. I am actually going to be a good kid tonight and no stay on the computer so long. I need to eat my bedtime snack and I want to do some of my needlepoint before I go to bed. Mostly I have to needlepoint after Abby goes to bed because the cat thinks she has to catch my needle with every stitch. Since you haven't been around here long, you may not know but Abby is the cat in my siggy. She has just turned one year old and I think she is going through adolescence! She is into everything!

Anyway enjoy your weekend off and do enjoy your quilting.
