I saw a sign advertising one of these and DeeDee and I guessed what it was and started 'planning' one.

Then we looked it up and found some elsewhere.

We do this - at school, not scouts.
I am an elementary strings teacher.

It is the second week of school at night.
Parents and kids come together.
There are parent meetings at 6 and 7 for about 15 minutes - general info.

Between 6-8 we have lines in each of the locker rows.
One line is cello viola
Another violin bass
Another for band, etc.

Kids may get in line and try the instruments.
The first week of school we do an assembly at each school to introduce the instruments, we play for the kids, and hand out forms with info about this night.

I always thank my lucky stars that I am strings and don't have to deal with the sanitation issues that night!

I think I was picturing it as something for the younger set with high schoolers encouraging preschoolers.

Or something different for Brownies for the music / art themed badges.

I'm glad you described what you do - I didn't go to band night for either kid.

In that case, I would not have the young kids play.
Too early, instruments are too large for them to handle anyway.
I'd make it more of an "up close" visit, where the HS kids play.

LOL- That's not at all what I guessed by the title... My brain must be working in weird ways now that it's really tired again...

In my head, I saw a large room with various "instruments" around and the "expert" person who knew about it and kids going from one to the next to try/see all the cool stuff. The "instruments" consisted of things like a weather forcasting equipment (barometers, rain guages...), navigation equipment (compass, GPS...), science equipment (like the static machine or chemistry lab stuff...), Maybe even a rotary telephone or typewriter or kitchen gadgets of all kinds or doctor/dentist instruments... the possibilities are endless.

OK, now that I've shared that vision from my head, I'm sure you all will think I'm nuts!

Jen- I have to admit I thought the same way you did.

To everyone,
I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing what you do and find. I have gotten so many many ideas off of this board. I was sort of stuck for planning some winter meetings and this has opened a new line of thought for me.

My boys saw a rotary phone for the first time while we were on vacation.
