Must one fast before a CMP - please help

Good morning! I just found out last night that DH has been diagnosed diabetic. He was put on Metformin and is supposed to be contacted by a nutritionist or dietitian. Needless to say we are very concerned and at a loss as to what to do while he waits for the dietitian to call.

Our concern is that DH was not told to fast before his Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP). He ate within the two hours prior to the blood draw, and his doctor was aware of this. Blood sugar was 280. His A1c was 11.5 (the paperwork he got states that it should be less than 6, but less than 7 will be acceptable).

Please - does anyone know if not fasting would cause the blood sugar to be extremely high? I am going to call my doctor and ask after they open, but hoping that someone here will know. Thanks so much!

Hi and Good Morning,

Welcome to the board.

I am very sorry to tell you that he was going to get this diagnosis whether he fasted or not. What he had done is called a random blood sugar and anything over 190 is diagnostic for diabetes. While doctors don't use the A1C as a diagnostic tool any thing over 6 is diabetic.

At this point push as hard as you need to get into the diabetic education classes. He needs to be eating as a diabetic and he needs to be checking his blood sugar.

I am hoping that he was started on a small dose of metformin. Please make sure he takes it with food in his tummy. It takes about 2 weeks for his system to get used to the metformin. In the meantime he can have lots of gastric distress. But it will end.

I am absolutely sure that he doesn't feel well right now and ultimately will be glad to know what was making him feel so bad. There is so much to learn at the very worst time to learn it.

Please look in the folder below on this page and find the article "Eating To Beat Diabetes". It will help you until you can get into the education classes.

Cheryl, the other CL for this board is away this week but she would tell you to go to the Joslin site and look at the information for beginners. Here is the URL for the site www.joslin.org. There is a specific address within this site but I don't remember it. Sorry. Joslin is part of Harvard University.

So please pull up a chair and join our conversation. We have a number of wives of diabetics active on the board right now. While I am a type 2 diabetic, so is my husband and so I know this issue as a family member also.

A welcoming hug,
