New - need help with fasting level

Hi there, my name is Michelle and I am new here. I had GD with my last baby, born in November, and when I had my followup test done when she was 8 months I tested a high enough that they are diagnosing me with type 2. However, the circumstances were such that the results may have been a bit off, due to stress and travelling etc. At best I would be prediabetic though, so I still need to get things under control.

I have been doing some testing, and most of my 2 hour numbers are good, even though I am eating pretty much the same. (I was doing this to see just where things stood when life settled down a bit.) However, the one number I am having some difficulty with is my fasting number, also the one I had the most trouble with when pregnant too.

My question is what can I do to help that number, and how soon after rising should I be testing? I am going to have the same glucose tolerance test done at the end of August or early September, so if I can get things settled down before that would be awesome.

Thanks, Michelle

Michelle

I think this number is often higher due to insulin resistance although sometimes it will be high for other reasons, so exercise could help!! That often will really help with insulin resistance.

I believe the recommendation for testing is as soon as you get up.

Thanks! So does it matter what time of day I excercise? And how much excercise is enough to make a difference? From what I know I believe my problem does stem from insulin resistance, so hopefully this will help, I will certainly check into it more.

Thanks, Michelle

My personal philosophy on exercise is to do it when it works for you!! IF you do it after eating it can sometimes keep your numbers from going higher after the meal, but there is no magic calculation on that. If you just really overeat it sometimes can be unsafe to exercise. If you are a type one i beleive the recommendation is not to exercise if the BG number is 250 or higher. I have not seen a specific number for type 2's and for type 1's there is a specific condition that can happen if you are too high when you start to exercise.

I think the rule of thumb is to exercise at least 1/2 hour 5-6 days a week. Mary Frances did post it in one of the other messages in the last day or so.

Especially if you are on meds, it is probably a good idea to have a snack if you are less than 100 before you go to exercise. I have found that if my number is lower, than exercising often results in my BG number going higher. If it starts higher than 100 it usually goes lower.

One thing you might like to do if you start exercising is sign up for the presidents challenge. the web site is:
http://www.presidentschallenge.org/

although it is a US site, i dont see anything limiting it to US citizens and know once you are on it, you can compare statistics with others and they list areas all over the place not just the US.

Thanks! I will see if I can find Mary Frances' post, my computer has been having issues, so it takes me a long time to get through the posts, and with four children I don't have much time on here, lol! That was some great info, thanks again, Michelle

I know if i go on from home, i have dial up...talk about slow motion!!

I will say using the pres challenge to record your exercise I found very helpful to motivate me. that program also is not a big problem with slow connections.

I briefly glanced at it but haven't had time to go much farther than that. And actually it is my computer itself that is the problem, not the connection, that is great! I just get tired of loading the page all the time and refreshing it and all of that. I need a "geek" in my house to keep my computer up to speed! I could do it, but I am too chicken of deleting the wrong thing!
