What should DH do until he sees an RD?

Good morning!  DH was dx two weeks ago and still has no app't. with the hospital for their diabetes classes and 1-hr. app't. with a dietitian.  We have no clue what he should be eating.  No clue what his blood sugar is.  No clue if all he needs to be doing right now is taking the Metformin and not worrying about anything else.  No clue if he can eat sugar - or should we get everything with Splenda.

I am scared and very frustrated.  By choice, it will be up to me to make most of DH's meals and see to it that he stays on track.  He has told me many times that he will need my help with all of this - especially until this becomes second nature.

Where can I see a list of what he should be eating and when?  All I can find are general statements to eat healthy and to see an RD.  But I know that he should be eating so many exchanges at each meal.  How many?  Where can I get this?

Any help would be so appreciated.

Hi Laurie,

Then general idea and what I think most of us do here is count carbohydrates. You can find the amount of carbs on the nurtition label. Generally it is 30 for breakfast and 45 for lunch and dinner. I usually don't do snacks but I believe it is about 15 carbs. I focus on eating grains, fruits and veggies with some meat for protien. If he isn't already, your husband should be exercising even it is only walking.

I don't have an answer about the meds as I am controlling mine so far with diet and exercise. Mary Francis, one of the board leaders, is a nurse and will be able to answer those.

Hope that helps without getting to technical. It should get you started until your appointments.

Hi Laurie,

Welcome to the board. We are here to support you as best we can. Do you know what your husband's lab results were?

I am glad that he has been referred for diabetic education but I am sorry it is taking so long to get there. Here is the link to a very good article here on iVillage. It is entitled "Eating to Beat Diabetes". Please read it and save if for future reference.

Also look at the Joslin web site www.joslin.org. Joslin is part of Harvard University and they have a special section of their web site for the newly diagnosed.

Basically the recommendation for exercise for diabetics is 10,000 steps per day
