Hi!! I've been lurking here for quite some time, and have gotten alot of valuable info from everyone. I'm a type 2, was diagnosed about 1 1/2 years ago. I have been going to a Neurologist because I already have neuropathy in my feet & hands. He thinks that I have had diabetes for much longer than 1 1/2 years. I have a couple of questions. When I went to my diabetes classes and saw a dietitian, she figured that I can have 57 carbs for each meal, and 15 for 2 snacks a day (morning & afternoon). Compared to the numbers I've seen some of you post, my numbers seem really high. Should I be trying to keep the numbers lower? How do they figure how many a person can have? My other question is--I've lost about 36 pounds. Do the amounts of carbs you should eat decrease as your weight decreases?
Thanks for any info you can give me!!!

Hi,
Welcome to the board. That's a large amount of carbs! That's in the calorie range of about 1700 calories. It is hard for a diabetic to lose weight at that level. But you have been successful. Once again I am going to suggest that you look at the article entitled "Eating to Beat Diabetes". Please look in the folder below for the url to the article. It has really useful information and you can decide if you need to decrease the amount of carbs that you are eating. Ultimately you will need to decrease them or you will stop losing weight.
I am on Lantus which is a long acting insulin and Symlin and I must have 30 grams of carbs or I can't take my medicine. I try to stay as close to the 30-45 range because I am trying to lose more weight. I am actually not being successful in losing weight but then I am not gaining either. Insulin is a wonderful drug for causing weight gain so I feel that I am being successful. I just wish I had lost all the weight I needed to lose before I ended up on insulin. But if wishes were horses beggars would ride!!
