Hi everyone:
I would like to know how low is low as far as blood sugar when you would need to treat it with soda or orange juice? I was doing very well with my numbers around 91 to 115 when I test. I had my breakfast today as usual and even a snack two hours later with a protein. Soon after, I started feeling very shaky and decided to test. I was 63. Is that low? I didn't like the shakes and wasn't ready for lunch since I thought you should wait 4 or 5 hours after breakfast to eat lunch. I have never been that low before. Is 63 low? I immediately drank sugar ice tea, all we had, and tested again and got a 90 and I felt better. I only drank two or three swigs of the ice tea. I wonder what that is all about. I take Metformin twice a day and that is all.
Also, DH wants to know. If I do happen to go unconscious due to low blood sugar, besides calling 911, is there anything else he should do?
And my final question, I lost 50 pounds since my diagnosis in April. Is that too much to lose in that short of time? I know it goes on slow and comes off slow, but I wonder if that much too soon is a problem. But I must say, I feel so much better with the weight loss. It hasn't improved my hiatal hernia/GERD though, because I keep coughing through the night and I can't sleep. It drives me nuts. I also have allergies and that doesn't help. But, that isn't related to diabetes anyway, it is just that I don't need more problems.
Thanks.
Debbie

Hey Debbie,
63 is too low and you need to treat it. Mostly likely you won't seizure or go unconscious unless it is less than 40. You are to be congratulated on your weight loss. It is wonderful and because of this weight loss you may need to reduce the amount of medication that you are on. You need to call your doctor if you don't have an appointment scheduled soon. You are doing wonderfully.
When you have a low blood sugar you need to have 15 grams of carbs and then test again in 15 minutes to see if your blood sugar has come up enough. Buy some glucose tabs and keep them handy. They are 5 grams of carbs per tab. If you do this you won't over treat your low.
Thank you Mary Frances so very much. You have been a big help to me since the beginning. I wrote about you in my other email from today. Because of your help, my A1C is now down to 6.0.
What you said makes perfect sense. I will see my doctor on the 14th of this month to discuss things.
I will look for the glucose tabs; thanks so much for that info as well.
Take care.
Debbie
