I know I am extremely lucky to still be able to handle diabetes with diet and exercise although lately exercise is sorta rare.
I did something to the nail on my big toe about 1 1/2 weeks ago. I will say I have ALL THE FEELING in them!! it started with one side of the toe, where the nail i was trimming cracked off and i yanked out the tag piece.(have done that lots of times before and no problem). this time it got a little red under the nail and then the outside edge which i was trying to trim evener, sorta the same thing happened. well the left side healed nicely. the outside did not! last friday first i was going to wait and see what happened this week, and then as toe started hurting more called dr. they said since it was just a little red and not oozing or anything to just soak it in hot water and epsom salts and see what happened after the weekend. they didnt prescribe anything. well i knew by saturday and sunday that was the wrong choice. soaking it seems to have unleashed the nasties, and i think it has turned into not only an infection but also an ingrown toenail. talk about smarting!! so called this am, and my doctor called in antibiotic. i got that at noon. also see podiatrist tomorrow morning to see if it really is an ingrown toenail or what. got some floppy shoes at noon, which turned out to be bigger than wise(sandals with just a plain cloth top. but my feet sorta slip forward. I didnt want thongs cuz i know i often will get blisters between big toe and next and dont need any more fun.
Bad part is I dont know what the podiatrist will say. I cannot use crutches or walker right now with the bum shoulder. and a wheelchair would be even worse. am sorta hoping they have some type of shoe with big top i can use to wear on that foot. am also really leery of wearing sandels and open toed stuff due to getting dirt in that. I did notice my fasting was 145, and for me that is really really high. its high this afternoon, but that one really let me know that the infection is being nasty.
I sure hope this doesnt turn into a long drawn out thing. otherwise i wont be able to use weights due to shoulder, things in pool due to open wound on toe, and also problems on treadmill, and elliptical due to sore toe. blecchh!!
thankfully things have died down at work so we are not major overtiming. i dont think i have the energy for that right now!!
oh well, at least i should have plenty of time to make baby blankets!!

I have heard lots of people with back problems getting various sensations in feet, legs, etc. Guess the biggest thing to remember is being diabetic, they will be slow to heal, so its best to nip any problems in the bud!!
I do remember after breaking my leg in 92, about 2 years l later I was having lots of problems with the outside of my leg especially going major numb when i was sleeping. At that time I had a plate and 6 or 8 pins in the leg. When they xrayed it they discovered at some point the plate had torqued a little away from the bone on one end. The doctor decided it was best to remove them, since by that point the leg had totally healed. But I also was having a lot of problems then walking on any type of slanted ground, i think due to that plate that was in there. That did go away after they took the plate and pins out! I know I was nervous for about 5-10 years after that, especially since they had used a bone graft on it too to make it more stable. Thankfully there were no blood tranfusion needed although they thought for a while they were going to. The two best things to come out of that broken leg were learning to deal with adversity better(and feeling more confident doing it) and also spending those 5-6 months 24/7 with my Twinkie! Amazing how much help a little doxie can be!!
I think there can be numbness from back problems. Thankfully my back has been pretty strong. Amazing considering the things I did to it back in my teens. I was something of a klutz even in gym class. Attempted a front drop on a trampoline and instead landed on my chest and neck while my feet it the tramp above my head! I was on muscle relaxers for several weeks, and the attendance director yelled at my poor gym teacher for allowing me to do something so dangerous!!
I think keeping a bandaide on the toenail is smart. I did ram one of the toes into the bed frame wheel and it sorta ripped the top of the nail bigtime. It took forever to heel and for a long time it was like the upper part was not attached to the toe. I did have broken skin from it, but never turned ugly or infected. I was really watching it too.
I know i have some degree of neuropathy in feet, but can feel almost everything. sometimes i dont feel much of touch on the skin, but feel anything that presses on the foot much at all. Mostly what i would describe mine as is it almost feels like I have socks on even if I don't. I know this last week I almost wished I didnt feel things cuz it really hurt, but I DO KNOW its better that i could feel it no matter how much it hurt. Its better to be aware of what is going on, than to have something nasty happen and have it get worse without realizing it.
That's a difficult one for the doctor's to figure out. If you have injured L3-L4 and possibly L5 you can get numbness without it being diabetic neuropathy. I get terrible cramps in my feet and legs. Thus far the lab reports indicated that it is not from ym statin so it must be from my very bad discs in my back. But it is certainly hard to tell.
Neuropathy does feel like numbness but it is also painful and sometime itches (which is the lowest level of pain). Regardless of the cause of your numbness please be extra careful with your feet and make sure you don't injure them.
I am still having problems with pages loading up.
Thanks everyone for you in put about the neuropathy. I think is must be from my back as I have had it before I was diagnosed diabetic. My back is mostly the SI joint and L5 which I injured 20 years ago and then reinjured 4 years ago. Had an EMG 4 years ago and it registered recent nerve damage but it is not getting better. So far it is just tingling and numbness, no pain.
As far as the toe, just waiting to let it grow out and hopefully with no problems.
It sounds like a lot of us have the same combination of problems. I am certainly glad I found this board.
