I am sure hoping that this board can help me understand what is going on with my blood sugar and my doctor train of thoughts. My thyroid went wacky about the same time my blood sugar shot way high. Ever since then she has me coming in and getting my blood drawn for sugar and thyroid every six weeks. With the help of medication my thyroid is under control but my sugar is still bouncing around in the high didgets. (last draw on a fast was 140) And, I'm not a sweet eater or drinker. My mother is diabetic and everyone on my mothers side of the family.
But, now my doctor wants me to come back in and have another blood test drawn that is different than the one that I just had done. She said it will tell us if my sugar is high all the time or just occasionally. So, I'm wondering how come that test wasn't run to begin with? And if any of you can tell me about the tests? I'd appriecate any help that you can give me. Thank you all ~ star

Hi Star,
Welcome to the board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.
The test that your doctor is talking about is an A1C. It measures your blood sugar over a 2-3 month period of time. There is nothing you can do to change the values in this test and that is one of its many good points. Anything above 6 is not normal and some doctors use it as diagnostic for diabetes. Normal for a non-diabetic is 4-6. It is advisable for your doctor to perform this test and I can't understand why she hasn't done it already. The diagnosis of diabetes is two fasting blood sugars above 126, or a random blood sugar above 190 or an A1C above 6.
When do you see the doctor again? When you go in take a log of your blood sugar reading if you have a meter. It sounds like you are at least a pre-diabetic and perhaps already diabetic. So she really needs to give you your diagnosis and soon. Then you can figure out what you need to do and to be concerned about.
So please let us know what she tells you.
