Update and Question

Hi everyone.

I was at the doctor on Tuesday and she told me that all my numbers were good; including my cholesterol. I am so happy about this all. She took me off the morning Metformin pill so I am now on it only once a day. I lost about 50-55 pounds in all, but she doesn't want my blood sugar numbers to go way down so I am to have about 60 carbs at meals (not breakfast). I want to exercise more, but have been too busy. I am just worried about gaining the weight back so I need to make sure I find time to exercise.

I have another toe procedure on my left foot now because I keep getting ingrown toenails. I had the right one down in April so I know the procedure.

Also, my SIL wants to lose weight and would like to follow the regime I am on with 30 carbs, 45 and 45 with snacks of 15-18 carbs. She isn't diabetic, but thought it was okay for her to follow this also. Do you think that will be alright? I don't want to stear her wrong.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

A very happy Debbie

Debbie,

Congratulations on your weight loss. As I told you, I am not surprised that your doctor reduced your medication. My personal opinion about increasing the carbs is this: Try to lose as much of the weight as you can before you increase the carbs. Diabetes is a progressive disease and ultimately you will need to be on medication. (Although this may be years away.) Unfortunately our medications cause weight gain. So get as close to normal weight or recommended weight as you can because it can be a real struggle to lose weight once you are on medication.

Try increasing your exercise to 30 minutes per day. Hopefully that is doable for you.

I see no reason why your SIL can't follow your eating plan. Of course her weight loss could and probably will be different than yours. This is an absolutely normal way to eat and shouldn't hurt anyone.

You are doing so well. I am so proud of you. Keep it up!!

Thanks so much Cheryl. I hope I can keep it up. This way of eating seems healthy to me ;) I will stay in touch. Take care.

Hi Mary Frances. Thank you. You have been such a big help to me. I will take your words to heart. I haven't increased by much. I am afraid of gaining weight. I want to lose about 20 more pounds. Then I will be my ideal weight for my height. The exercise is a bit harder because of numerous appointments, but if I can atleast get out and walk. It'll be better soon with the cooler air coming soon. Thanks again. I can choose my snacks a bit better, but I am getting better.

Remember to give yourself credit for making better choices!! It is easy to tell ourselves we "should have had" instead of what we did have. But contrary to those silly V-8 commercials....we don't need a bop on the head!! Sometimes it is much harder to keep doing as well as we are doing when we get frustrated over not always making the BEST choices!!

Your weight loss sure indicates that there have been MANY very GOOD choices!!
