I posted here on Aug-4 asking about the A1C test and I want to thank Maryfrances (sorry if I have spelt that wrong) for your information and update you on the outcome. Since the time that I posted that, - my son had decompression surgery and I've been quite busy so I decided not to take care of my appointments untel he was home and doing well again. My A1C number was 6.7 so my doctor decided not to worry to much about it since it wasn't very high (or outside of the normal range) she offered me to take a small dose of diabetic meds or control with diet and exercise. But, she did however prescribe me a meter so I could take my own at home. This is the odd part ... for my a1c to be so close to normal why is my numbers always high. It don't matter what time of day I take it or if I have ate or not. my readings in the mornings is anywhere from 240 to 187 and it stays that way all day. So, that is the update as of now. Thank you again for answering my question and being there. ~ star :0)

Hi Star,
When is your next appointment with your doctor?
All the stress that you have been under could make your numbers highers but as a brand new diabetic I don't think your A1C is okay. I would expect it to be closer to 6. The American Academy of Clinical Endocrinologist's (AACE) recommends 6.5 or less and as close to 6 as you can get it. Non-diabetic's A1C is 4-6. The closer to 6 that you can get it and keep it, the less cellular damage done to your eyes, kidneys, feet and heart.
Get your son taken care of and then push your doctor to help you get your blood sugar under better control. You can really only take care of one thing this major at a time.
When you see your doctor you will need to have your A1C repeated. Plus you need to take her your blood sugar readings and if possible a food dairy. If she hasn't referred you to a dietitian for meal planning help, you need that right away. You may be able to get your blood sugar under control with meal planning and exercise but you won't be able to do it by yourself. These lifestyle changes are what will do the trick.
So, I hope your son is feeling better real soon and that you are able to come here as needed to ask your questions and post your comments. We are here to help as best we can.
Being the not so proud ex-owner of a defective meter leads me to suggest you take your meter to your next appointment and double check against the doctors for accuracy. My meter was over 50 points off. Walmart meters are not the best quality. I use a Accu-check active now and it usually agrees with my doctors and the way I feel.
