newly diagnosed and confused

Hi! I was recently diagnosed, initial numbers were not TOO bad, 240. I am taking Actos, and excersing, and trying to eat right. Thats where I am having trouble. I also was diagnosed with high cholesterol, so I am on medication for that, as well as low fat eating. I have been avoiding sweets, period.......and use splenda in my coffee of tea. It's the food and the carbs and such that have me baffled. I cannot afford to go to a nutrionist. Can anyone help?

Diabetes and periods and menopause can be related..
Susan,
It is really important that you NOT take the Actos until someone figures out whether you are pregnant or not. Actos can cause you to ovulate. So you need to have that figured out immediately. You could get pregnant and I am sure that would be a great surprise (of course there has to be a partner for this to happen!!).
I hope your doctor has called you back by now.
You can have pasta with spaghetti sauce but you should have more than 1/3 cup of noodles and the bread is probably out because there are too many carbs. You will have to get used to the artificial sweeteners. They will taste strange for a while but you will get used to them. I usually don't drink things which have artificial sweeteners. I drink plain or flavored teas and water. But the plain sugar is really a no-no. Please try to stay out of it. Yes, technically you can have 1 tsp as part of diabetic eating and that doesn't go that far.
But you seem calmer today and that is good. You will make it. Hang in there.
I had blood work done last week and went in yesterday for follow-up. Doc was very happy with me!
