question about my numbers today
| Thu, 09-13-2007 - 12:20pm |
First of all, I just wanted to thank everyone for all the helpful info. I have been doing a lot of reading the last day or two. This morning, when I first got up, I tested and it was 87. I am assuming that is good for first thing in the morning? Then for breakfast I had egg beaters, 1/3 cup (1gram carb) and also a whole wheat wrap, 16 carbs, sprinkled with about 2 tablespoons of lowfat cheddar cheese that I ran under the broiler. When I just tested after 2 hours, my reading was 155. Is that good?
One other question. I know I need to be drinking water, but I hate the stuff, however, I do like Crystal Light. Is this ok to drink instead of plain water?

After meal readings per my endo should be under 140. Before breakfast she says between 90 and 110 so 87 isn't bad, given there's always a small percentage over/under since no reading is 100% perfect (you can test two different fingers at the same time, one after the other, and get slightly different reading but they should be close). However, the American Diabetes Assoc website has different numbers - pre-meal they list 90-130 and post meal under 180. So, 155 isn't "bad" exactly (250 would be bad) but the tighter you can control things from the get go the lower the risks of complications are and the slower the situation is to progress to being harder to control and requiring more meds and such. For myself, I aim for the tighter target as my goal but I'm not too hard on myself if it's over that but still under the ADA numbers. If it's past there, somethings outta whack and needs attention. Basically, I give myself a little leeway as I'm working out what works and what doesn't (since it's only about 7 months since my dx). I'm still running into foods and situations I haven't come across yet (like my first plane flight since dx coming up).
Oh, also, keep an eye on your cycle - hormones can play havoc with glucose levels, so what has you fine and comfy one day might be too high or too low the next.

Your fasting number was wonderful!!!
Hi Venusmom,
I would like to join the chorus. Your pre-breakfast number was wonderful. With about 20 grams of carbs I don't understand why your 2 hour was as high as it was. Perhaps you didn't have enough protein. You need one protein exchange at least and it is probably better to have two. If you don't have enough protein you absorb the carbs too quickly and it will cause your blood sugar to go too high. 1 ounce of protein has 90 calories so the egg beaters was short.
Try increasing your protein and see if that helps.
I try to meet the goals of the AACE also. I think the ADA is behind times of this one. Because they do everything on consensus it takes them awhile to getting around to change any recommendation. I have been diabetic 17 years and I haven't developed any complications and I don't want any. So I try as hard as I can to keep my numbers as close to normal as possible.
