Pungent Urine

Hi I'm 24 and I found out that I have high blood pressure and a borderline diabetic. Currently I don't take any meds for the diabetes, but I was on Hyzaar dosed 100/25. I don't take it anymore. My urine is really dark and a bit cloudy. It has a really really really really strong smell. I maybe drink about 16 ozs of water a day. The rest of my fluids come from fruit juice. I was wondering if this could be a indication that something is going wrong with my kidneys? When I drink more water, the color lightens and it smell less, but it never goes away and it was actually the reason I went to the doctor in the first place.  I have really carved down my fruit juice drinking, but nothing has changed. I am ashamed to use public bathrooms and even at home I am embarassed if my boyfriend goes in after I've urinated because the smell is just that bad. Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't take any viatimins. I apprecitate the answers. I was kinda thinking maybe this was typical of diabetes, but I guess not. I know I need to lay off the fruit juice and I have been really cutting down and I completely cut soda out. I use to be reallly bad. Me and my boyfriend would got to kroger every week and get the 4 12 pks for 5 dollars. I stopped that and I guess the fruit juice has been a cruch. I thought cranberry juices were good, but I know I over do it. I have never been much of a water drinker and this seems so silly, but it's hard. I was thinking about maybe trying

Yes, Propel would be a better choice than juice or pop for you.

Hi Leona,

I am the other community leader for this board. My sister is the co-community leader for the cystitis board so please feel free to go there also to ask your questions. She really is an expert on urinary questions. My name is Mary Frances and I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.

All that being said I have a few words for you that haven't already been said. First off diabetics are very susceptible to urinary tract infections and in fact diabetes is the number one cause of them. But you can prevent urinary tract infection and you can treat them by using increased fluids. That means water, tea and coffee and other beverages which don't have calories in them.

Cheryl gave you every reason to decrease the amount of fruit juice that you have been drinking. It is really much better to eat your fruit than to drink juice.

When you increase your fluid intact you wash out the cells in the bladder which will cause an infection and you also dilute them so that they can't do their dirty work. The flushing of the bladder causes you to discard the dead cells in the wall of the bladder and this is a good thing.

You can add flavoring to the water such as a slice of lemon or lime or some raspberries for example. You can also drink it hot or cold, whatever your preference. But 16 ounces of fluids a day
