Need Hypoglycemia Coma Information

I need some information and I am hoping someone on this board can point me in the right direction. My Mom has diabetes and has been struggling with hypoglycemia for several years. Her blood sugar drops really fast and she cannot catch it and she passes out. It has been a common occurrence over the past 5 years. She has tried everything, insulin pumps, continuous monitors etc. Last week she passed out due to low blood sugar and was out for several hours before my Dad got home. He gave her glucagon and her blood sugar returned to normal, but she was still out. She has been in the ICU since then and her brain is still out of it. All of the tests have come back fine and the MRI shows no irreversible brain damage. She has stumped all the doctors. She is making small steps back to normal, but she is still acting like her blood sugar is really low. I cannot find any information on other cases like this or how long or if recovery will occur. I am very worried and I know we have a long road ahead of us, but I am getting frustrated in the lack of information I can find. Can anyone give me any information or point me in the right direction. Sorry for the long post.

Limulus9,

I am so sorry to read about your mother. I don't have much information to give you. I do recognize that your mother has hypoglycemia unawares or neuroglycopenia. I also recognize that she must be a very brittle diabetic. I am frankly surprised that the continuous meter didn't help. If anyone was a candidate for a continuous meter it would be your mother. You don't say what your mother's current treatment is but she has to be on insulin and she must be taking too much.

I am so glad that the MRI didn't show irreversible brain damage. Probably at this point she is just repairing the damage done by the hypoglycemia and the coma. Brain cells are so sensitive to the fluxuation in the blood sugar and they were starved for a while.

I don't have any suggestions for you. All I can offer is a gentle hug and great concern for you and your mom. Please let us know how she does. In the mean time I will keep all of you in my prayers and thoughts.

I said I would give you more info concerning a friend who recently went into a Coma (see this thread). Her news is excellent. Her memory loss lasted for 10 days and she is fully recovered. She has to attend a dietary class and be more aware of her insulin needs as her doctor thinks she is mismanaging her balance between Carbs and Insulin.

I hope you friend is now fully recovered.
