Hi my name is Harmony & I have been here before but about HIGH blood sugar & control by diet. However in the last few months my sugar came to normal then it has been droping quickly after meals. I ve been testing w/ a meter at home. No insulin or anything like that & I dont eat alot of sugar products or  any soda I do drink a semi sweet tea. All this was fine till about 2 months ago then I felt sick alot and just thought it was my meds ( I checked with the Dr none of my meds cause low blood sugar) after a Dr's appt. we found out my sugar was 70 after 4 hours from eating. So she said to check it more often.  My morning test around 2am  is 90-103 daily ( I work nights)  Today I had a snack & half glass soda (1st in 2 weeks) and some honey BBQ corn chips. I took my sugar at 5 (2 hours after snack) it was 147 then again @ 7am after I ate some meatloaf & mashed tators w/ gravy it was 108 . Why the sudden drop in 2hrs & by 9 or 10 my sugar will most likely be around 80 If I dont eat it will go lower & I hate that.

It seems like I HAVE to eat every 4 hours or so & honestly Im not hungry like that & I have lost 11 lbs since april. Drinking something sweet brings it up to 90 I hate candy bars like I said I spent so much time watching my sugar cuz of it being high now its hard to get use to eating it. My last A1C was 4/5 back in July . I have a slip for another round of blood work to be done soon. Any information would be really helpful and any where I could read up that I might not of seen yet on the net.

Thanks

Hi Harmony,

Welcome back.

Before I try to answer your question could I please ask a favor of you? Many of us on this board, thanks to our diabetes, have visual problems. Could you please use a larger font? I'm sorry but I had a terrible time trying to read your message.

You are eating or drinking simple carbs in the form of sugar in the soft drink and in the potatoes that you had. Simple carbs raise your blood sugar quickly and drop it just as quickly. Also based upon your A1C reading you might correctly be diagnosed as hypoglycemic. There is an hyperinsulin state which goes along with diabetes, and in fact is a form of diabetes, which may be causing your problem. Also based upon your A1C you must be having many more episodes of low blood sugar than you realize.

Most of us who have diabetes find that we need to eat about every four hours during our waking time to keep our blood sugars in balance. It doesn't have to be a big meal but something as simple as some fruit or nuts and perhaps some peanut butter or cheese. I know how hard it is to eat and try and get enough sleep when you are a shift worker. When I worked nights I was perpetually nauseated because I couldn't handle the time change. You are to be congratulated because of your weight loss and that has helped for sure in bringing down your blood sugar. In diabetes we have a saying and that is "If its white, don't bite." Trying add more whole grains into your food choices by eating whole fruits and whole wheat grains and sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes. Also you need to add more veggies into the mix.

Please use the search tool on this board to find the article entitled "Eating to Beat Diabetes". It is located in the third folder on this page. It will help you better understand what you should be eating and how much.

I am so glad you came back to see us. Please continue to post your questions and comments. Have a great weekend. I love your siggy.

Thank you MaryFrances & sorry about the font .

I do not eat bread that often I took it out a while ago & I dont like it to much & it I eat bagles its a grain brand. I'm not a fan of sweet potatoes but have thought of giving them another try, I also eat veggies w/ every meal just not at work last night. Last night was a off the wall dinner & I dont snack like that or drink soda often .
