Flu Season will be here soon. What are you going to do?
- I will get a flu shot as soon as they are available.
- I already got my flu shot.
- Why do diabetics need flu shots? My Doc never said anything.
- I never get the flu.
- I don't believe in flu shots.

Actually, I probably won't get it right as soon as it's available but I -may- get it. I don't usually get a flu shot. The only times I've had the shots in my life is when it was required as part of my job (I was a dorm supervisor at a university and all residential staff were required to get them since we were in close contact with the students and a dorm supervisor out of commission was a bad thing).
I may get one this year, not so much because of the diabetes dx as that last year I got something that decided to go ahead and lodge in my lungs and I ended up with pneumonia. It was great for weight loss :-/ I lost about 10 lbs in 3 weeks because I was eating (if you could call it that) maybe 1 cup of chicken broth per day. That was pre-dx. I do NOT want to have to deal with that AND managing my blood sugar level.

I love your sunflower. It is so cute!
Anyone with diabetes is recommended to get a flu shot and a pneumonia shots also. Please ask your doctor. In the past few years we have been short of the number of dises of vaccine needed but that is not the case this year.

Seems too like for anyone who is taking any diabetes meds especially those other than metformin could run into big problems if they get the flu.
thank you ..

My internist tells me that the flu season peaks late January/early February and that you shuld have your shot about 2 months or so before for it to be at it's most effective during peak flu season.
I have had diabetes for 18 years and I have gotten a flu shot every year for the past 5 years. The last time I had the flu was 6 years ago. I swear by them and recommend them for anyone who has a chronic illness like diabetes. I've never had a pneumonia shot though. My doctor has never suggested one to me.
Get that flu shot!
You are correct about the flu season peaking in January/February but it takes about 6 weeks from the time you get the shot for it to be at its full preventive strength. We are supposed to have enough doses this year thankfully but still people should get it as soon as it is available. The only reason I got mine already is that my husband's internist called and said that they had it in and had a limited supply and that I was to come in soon to get it. My endo has basically retired and the new one taking his place doesn't get it in. Plus he was my primary care doc and she doesn't want to be so I am without a primary care doctor which makes for an interesting situation.
Do ask your doctor about the pneumonia
