Hello everyone! I am new to this board, and here to just checking things out for now. I am not diabetic, but my boyfriend is. I am just trying to learn what I can do to take care of him and incorperate things into our lifestyle. He has had diabetes for the last 19 years (he has type 1).  He is horrible at taking care of himself, so I am trying to learn how to do things without him knowing that I am doing it. Just thought I'd say hello and give some background information!

Emilie,

Welcome to the board. There are really three things that you can do: 1. Learn as much as you can so that you can recognize when something is going wrong, 2. Institute healthy eating for both of you which focuses on fresh fruits and veggies and foods rich in fiber and 3. Start an exercise regime that involves both of you so that he will get his exercise. If you are able to do these things he won't notice and both of you will be healthier.

I know it is tough being a standby for someone with diabetes. My husband has diabetes and of course so do I but he had it first. I try to make sure that he is in control of his disease and I am in control of mine.

Please pull up a chair and join our conversation. We are here to support you as well as diabetics.
