Should I get checked?

Hi everyone,

My father has diabetes, and I'm wondering if I should get checked.  I've been having fairly severe nerve problems in my feet for the past two years and have been diagnosed at different times with CMT neuropathy, tarsal tunnel, plantar fasciitis... you name it.  I didn't realize peripheral neuropathy had anything to do with diabetes until just a couple weeks ago.

I really started thinking about diabetes when my niece checked my father's blood after dinner one night.  I let her check mine too, since she likes doing it so much.  My father's score was 112 and mine was 130.  I had just eaten a big meal, but is it right that a diabetic should have such a lower score than a non-diabetic?  I am wondering if I should go back to my doctor and tell her my concerns.  What do you all think?  I don't want to keep going back to my doctor for every little concern.  Would you say a score that high is worth checking out, even though it was taken after a big meal?  For the record, I am a vegetarian and I work out just about every day.

Thanks for your advice!

Lisa

It is important to know when you say right after dinner exactly how long after dinner and what did dinner consist of?

If you have a family history of diabetes it is not a bad idea to get checked on a regular basis. I have a family history but was not formally diagnosed until age 38.

Lisa,

Welcome to the board.

Obesity, inactivity, age and heredity play a huge part in the diagnosis of diabetes. Since your father has diabetes you have an increased risk of becoming diabetic. So yes, you need to be checked and be routinely checked so that protected. The diagnosis of diabetes is 2 fasting blood sugars of 126 or a random blood sugar of 190 or above or an A1C of 6 or more. Using this criteria you don't meet the diagnostic criteria. Please ask for a check by your doctor and let us know what you find out.
