Hi Everyone,
It has certainly been a rough week around my house! Monday my husband became ill with vomiting. Tuesday he still didn't feel well but he took his diabetic meds in the morning and went to work. That night he ate his dinner and almost immediately went to bed. He didn't take his evening diabetic meds. Wednesday he went to work after eating his breakfast and taking his morning meds and experience severe hypoglycemia and was taken to the emergency room via ambulance. They gave him IV glucose and something to eat and when his blood sugar came up to 100, they decided to keep him and he decided to sign himself out against medical advise. His reason was that he wanted to see his own doctor who is in the next town over. Of course no one called me!
Then he went back where he works and one of the other workers drove him home. Luckily he didn't want to drive. Any way when he came home his blood sugar was 52. I gave him some sugar under his tongue and in 15 minutes it went up to 54. I told him he had to go to the emergency room and he wanted me to drive him to his doctor's house. Thankfully I couldn't remember where he lives. DH was talking very strangely and I thought he was going to have a seizure. In fact I began to wonder if I had made a mistake by not calling an ambulance to take him the the hospital. But he probably would have refused to go. Anyway I also thought that he might be having a stroke. The local nurses were out on strike and I had to cross their picket line but this was an emergency and I didn't have anywhere else to take him. When we got to the emergency room his blood sugar was 37. They gave him IV glucose and he immediately pinked up and his strange talking stopped. But soon his blood sugar dropped again and they had give him more glucose as well as run his IV much faster. He then threw up all the food that he had eaten that day. So finally at midnight he was transferred to ICU where he stayed for the next two days.
Exactly what caused his problems we don't know. It appears that he got a viral infection. But for sure he flunked the first rule of diabetes. This important rule is to notify your physician if your blood sugar is below 80 or above 400. He also flunked the second rule which is don't take your medication if your blood sugar is too low and you have vomiting or diarrhea. In which case you need to call your physician.
I have never seen neuroglycopenia up close and personal before and thank you, I don't want to again!! We do not know why he couldn't absorb his carbs but after 24 hours of no eating he seemed to be doing better.
Anyway he has now been sent home from the hospital. His blood sugars haven't been bad especially when you consider that he hasn't had any meds since Wednesday morning. His doctor has glucotrol and actos and started him on metformin. If the metformin isn't able to keep his reading under control then the actos will be added back in and finally if needed a smaller dose of glucotrol will be added. So we started tonight with 250 of metformin. Let's hope it doesn't make him to miserable.
Tonight he has been talking to all his relatives, helping me in the kitchen, playing with Abby and generally been really cheerful. We went for a short walk today which really seemed to help him. He enjoyed the fresh air and the exercise. So he seems to be on the mend, hopefully no worse for wear.

I am glad he back home and feeling better.. and I hope that doesn't happed again to you
