My name is Erika. I am a 40 year old mother of 2 beautiful boys. Both were quite large at birth, but I had tested negative for gestational diabetes. I had not had a physical in a while. You know how it goes when you are the mom, everything else is more important. Anyway, I went in for a routine physical this morning and everything was fine until he got the blood sugar back. It was 143 which he said was possibly pre-diabetes. It was first thing in the morning and I had not eaten since the night before. I know I carry extra weight and I have actually been making headway on that. I started a new job a few months back and started going to curves. And in the last two months I have lost 10 pounds. I am supposed to get back in a week or so to do further tests... I hate needles. I have horrible veins... And I am scared... Sorry this is kind of rambling.

Hi Erica,

What a pretty siggy you have!

The diagnosis of diabetes is made by two fasting blood sugars above 126. Pre-diabetes is between 100 and 125. Sorry but 143 is not pre-diabetes but it also isn't diabetes because you need the second test done. Hopefully they will also test your A1C and your cholesterol and lipids. All can be done with one needle stick. If you are diabetic, and I realize there is a good chance, I would suspect that you are early in the disease because your blood sugar isn't that bad.

Congratulations on going to Curves and your weight loss. I also go to Curves and have upped my visits to 5 times per week. I have finally started losing weight but I have dropped two dress sizes which is really nice for everything but my pocket book!

Please let us know what you next results are. We are here to support you.

How far apart should the second test be done? How much would what I do in the mean time affect anything?

I know what you mean about the weight loss not being easy on the pocket book. I have not bought much that is new because I am still about 35 pounds from my goal. I set that as what my drivers license says. 170. In talking with my doctor yesterday he said that based on my height, etc that 170 is the high end of the normal zone for me. So I guess it is a good initial goal. I will actually celebrate when I go under 200. I want to hit the initial goal before aiming any lower.

Erika,

There is an article entitled "Eating to Beat Diabetes" in the Hanging on folder. You can also do a search for it. Please get this article and print it out and read it. It has really good information which will help you.

I do not have all the results from yesterday. They did a glucose challenge and an a1c. The a1c they send out, so I won't have that for a few days. The initial/fasting draw had a sugar of 124. I do not know what the 2 hour draw was yet. I know that they should have had it, but my doctor was out before they drew the sample so I hope he would call on Monday. I am assuming the best I can hope for is the pre-diabetis diagnoisis. I was down to 203.8 from 209 at my physical. And I brought my curves report that showed my progress by month for the 2 months that I have been working out there. So at least he knows that I am making progress in getting my weight down.

My 2 hour blood glucose came in at 133. Under 140 is normal. I am still a bit confused by my fasting sugar being 124 and 143, but my doctor said that with the two hour being 133 he was going to leave me alone for a year with instructions to continue with curves and the weightloss and check it again next year.

Erika, I had my BG tested awhile back & it was elevated (my GYN had me have a bunch of blood tests looking into premenopause). I went to the GP when 2 of those tests came back w/elevated blood sugar levels. I had a fasting test done the end of last month. It was 170 :(. I've been trying to watch what I eat (no sugars, low carbs...) but it's obvious I need to do more. She has me set up to do the test again in another 3 months & then go back 10 days later for the results. Start reading labels, check out anything you can find at the library & on the web on diabetes. Basically, do your homework & watch what you're eating. Kathy
