I just got a call from my doctor. My blood test came back normal the third time around. They didn't tell me what the reading was, but I'm thrilled it was normal. The doctor did, however, give me a warning that since I had gestational diabetes when pregnant with my son 9 years ago, I have such a strong family history of diabetes, AND I'm so obese right now (BMI of 50.6), I run an extremely high risk of becoming diabetic at any time. He kind of made me feel like a ticking time-bomb or something....LOL...but I know he's speaking the truth. I really do need to do something.
He suggested that I eat no more than 45g of carbs at each meal, and try to eat sugar-free snacks like Jello for a treat if I want one. I can drink all the water and diet soft drinks I want. This sounds an awful lot like the diet my Mom was told to follow after she was diagnosed with Type 2 last year. She's been able to control her blood sugars really well without any medications since eating this way, and she lost 58 pounds too!
The doctor also wants me to monitor my blood sugars for morning fasting and after dinner, and if I ever feel "off" and to call him if anything looks wrong or feels wrong to me.
I'm excited about the possibility of losing some weight and avoiding serious complications as long as possible in my life, but I'm also wondering if there's life without rice and pasta. LOL! :-D And Popcorn at the movies!

There's nothing about life *without* rice and pasta and popcorn - it's a matter of portion and timing and combinations, most of the time. 1 Cup of brown rice is 23 grams of carbs. Add 1/2 cup steamed broccoli (approx 5 carbs I think) and 3 ounces (one serving) of baked chicken breast and top the broccoli and rice with a bit of Smart Balance margarine and add a big glass of water and you have only about 28 or so carbs and a good balanced meal. Combining carbs with protein and/or fat slows the absorption of the carbs into the bloodstream. Portion control is probably the biggest thing - I routinely get out the measuring cups to make sure my 'eyeball' measurements are accurately gauging one cup of cereal or rice or whatever.
And, if you're testing after dinner, you'll be able to discern if this or that really sets you off (for instance, baked potatoes cause a way bigger jump for me than brown rice or whole grain pasta).

Thanks Deb!
I've got some whole wheat pasta in my pantry, and I'll look for brown rice the next time I'm at the grocery store. It's good to know that these comfort food items won't have to be given up completely.
Portions have always been hard for me, but I do have a kitchen scale, and lots of measuring cups and spoons, so it's time to bring them all out and re-learn proper serving sizes. :-)
I've also considered using a smaller plate when I eat, at least until I get my portion sizes mastered. :-)

Thanks for letting us know!!!
Yeah, sometimes I don't know whether I'm really sleepy because my blood sugar is off or because I'm hypothyroid or just because I'm tired from staring at computer screen all the gray rainy day at work.
