Had doctors appt this morning. I am not really thrilled with the A1C number which was still up there at 6.3 BUT i also know I had several food attacks lately where i should have either not ate things, or ate less. That said, she said all the numbers were very good. It was sort of funny how she said it. She started out saying " Well, you really do need to lose more weight(well anyone can see that!!) BUT(she literally said the BUT) I certainly cannot fault you on your lab test numbers. they are really good!!"
i will confess this time I was sort of worried, the A1C would be up high. Well, it is still high for me because in the almost 5 years of having diabetes, there have ONLY been 4 times where I was at 6.0 or higher. 2- 6.1's. 1- 6.3 and 1-6.4(the really rotten one last time when the physical therapist was applying a steroid med to my shoulder). All of the rest have been 5.9 or below. By some miracle my BP(which is usually affected by white coat syndrome BIG TIME) was literally 108/67!! She did also give me referal to ortho for my shoulder. It is not really that I want to get cortisone(previos steroid meds lead me to believe IT WILL mess up my numbers) and surgery is alno potential problem but I want to at least know what is wrong...is it arthritis, rotator cuff tear, or something else. dr said the center of pain would not be in line of rotator cuff, but it might be important to know what it is to avoid it getting worse!!

I totally understand how you feel about that a1c.
I'm a little nervous about my next A1C result also - there was a patch of really up and down numbers over the last couple of months. Those are getting under control (I've had several consecutive days of good numbers up until last night when I *know* why it was high after dinner - 3 slices of homemade bread!) So far it's always been under 6.0 but this next one might be higher. If I understand it correctly, the A1C is kind of an 'average' of the blood sugar levels over the past 3 months. Is that correct? It'll probably average out because of the monthly lows if that's the case. It's so hard to guess because (by dr's orders) I only test once per day (unless something feels whacky). So, I can test low but be okay the rest of the day -or- I can test high but be okay the rest of the day -or- I can have a really bumpy day and it would all get blended into 'average'.
In my stubbornness, I've been working really hard lately to drop weight and get my cholesterol numbers down (my HDL is great, up around 70, but the LDL is still high). I want to 'prove' to the dr that I can do this pthht (last time I saw her, I weighed 3 lbs over the previous visit - I didn't mention or realize at the time it was like 3 days before my period and I *always* gain a bit of bloat at that time that washes out a week later - so I was actually about the same then - this time I'm set on registering a comfortable loss - nothing hazardous but consistent and healthy).

I think it is true if you have a lot of actual low numbers...where you go under 80 or so that would help pull the number lower because it is an average.
I know we have i think 5 people in this office with diabetes and I know 2 of them have said they would be overjoyed with my numbers!!
Sorry, "just do it' doesn't work for me.
Nancy,
I need to correct something you said. Also the most recent BG numbers have more of an effect of the older ones.
