Had doctors appt this morning. I am not really thrilled with the A1C number which was still up there at 6.3 BUT i also know I had several food attacks lately where i should have either not ate things, or ate less. That said, she said all the numbers were very good. It was sort of funny how she said it. She started out saying " Well, you really do need to lose more weight(well anyone can see that!!) BUT(she literally said the BUT) I certainly cannot fault you on your lab test numbers. they are really good!!"
i will confess this time I was sort of worried, the A1C would be up high. Well, it is still high for me because in the almost 5 years of having diabetes, there have ONLY been 4 times where I was at 6.0 or higher. 2- 6.1's. 1- 6.3 and 1-6.4(the really rotten one last time when the physical therapist was applying a steroid med to my shoulder). All of the rest have been 5.9 or below. By some miracle my BP(which is usually affected by white coat syndrome BIG TIME) was literally 108/67!! She did also give me referal to ortho for my shoulder. It is not really that I want to get cortisone(previos steroid meds lead me to believe IT WILL mess up my numbers) and surgery is alno potential problem but I want to at least know what is wrong...is it arthritis, rotator cuff tear, or something else. dr said the center of pain would not be in line of rotator cuff, but it might be important to know what it is to avoid it getting worse!!

I am on TriCor and it is the ONLY cholesterol lowering med I can take without horrid nerve pain that drops me to the floor. Something you need to know if you take statin drugs. They deplete the body of COQ10. This substance is required for energy production. If you are on statins and always tired best go to the health food store and get some COQ10. This problem is well known but doctors never tell patients about it. You heart depends on this substance to keep beating.
I said that MaryFrances because it seems like theoretically there would be less of the older cells in the test. More newer ones that are still old enough to have been affected by higher BG numbers. I wasn't saying that you can magically eat rotten the first 2 months then be perfect the last month and be ok. Just that the odds are more of the 3 month old cells may already be gone. I don't think there is enough effect to assume that most of the old bad cells are gone. Besides that am guessing its basically a crap shoot whether the older cells that are gone are the bad ones or the good ones.
In a way its sort of like exercising can lower your BG levels sometimes, but that does NOT translate to meaning its safe to go overboard assuming a walk will magically fix it.

I had my physical with my primary yesterday and he showed me my HDL and LDL numbers (my endo never shows me anything without my pushing her to it - argh!) My HDL is still high (yes HDL - the good stuff) at around 60 (it's usually between 60 and 70). My LDL has gone from 132 to 125 to 109 over the last 6 months - Yippee!! My primary agrees with my endo that I'd be better off (healthier to quote my primary) if I was on statins BUT he is willing to wait and see where things level off, see if I can drop it under 100, and then move forward from there rather than just throw statins at it.
Oh, there's why I mentioned this - we use Smart Balance (or Earth Balance which is an organic version of the same thing) which is one of those margarine like substances that does use plant sterols.

DOH forgot to check on the rest of the lab results in the lipid panel to check the triglyceride level

Particularly because if your bg is already really high, exercise can sometimes send it even higher rather than lowering it.

And, whenever possible, get direct sunlight too - just walk out to the car at lunchtime and walk back in again if that's all you've got time for. The full spectrum light is helpful as well for SADD - these nasty fluorescents not so great.

If you drink yogurt there is now a type of yogurt that has the plant sterols too!!
For some reason all of a suddent centrum vitamins again as the cardio version. that also has plant sterols!!
I do think they make a big difference.
I toss in a pat of the Smart Balance on pasta, on home made bread (gotta watch that though - it's SO good. all warm and soft, that I have to really work at not eating more than one slice at any given time), occasionally on steamed veggies - mostly so that I get that feeling of having had a little "fat" in my food to get that texture and all. It really helps if I have just a little, rather than having all low fat/non fat all the time. Same reason I like a dollop of low fat sour cream on DH's marvelous veggie chili - it gives that "mouth feel" of something luxurious so I feel satisfied with less.

Well, appointment was yesterday and here are the stats:
weight down 5 lbs in the last 3 months
blood pressure 120/80
HDL 60 (over 50 is recommended for women)
LDL 109 (spring 2007 it was 132, summer it was 125)
-and-
A1c was 5.6! Phew!
Endo still wants me on statins but my primary is willing to wait to see where my LDL plateaus and then work on it from that point. I prefer his outlook on it so when *he* says Let's talk statins, then I'll discuss it.
Which brings up a question (maybe I've asked before?):
Are you on statins?
If so, which one?
How many times did you have to switch or adjust the medication before finding something that both worked well and was tolerated okay?
