New Diabetic

Hello all... I am a newly diagnosed type 2 diabetic.  It all came about from a status migraine.  I was in the hospital for the migraine and they did routine blood work that included a fasting glucose (164).  While they don't feel that my blood sugar is the cause of my headahce they can't rule it out.

She started me on metformin and we discussed diet and exercise.  I am a police officer and don't always get time for lunch nor do I always get to eat the best foods for me, nature of the job sometimes.  I am currently a bike patrol until so I ride a bike about 6 hrs a day which helps with exercise but the Texas heat takes it toll on me and I consume alot of gatorade.  I dropped sodas about a year ago after my mom dies of pancreatic cancer.  I try to carry good snack but am limited to what I can carry on a bike.  I do drink at least 3-4 liters of water a day.

I am looking for suggestions of snacks and drinks that I can take to work with me and a gatorade alternative...I tried propel but it tastes too sweet for me.  I crave salty before I crave sweet if that helps any.  I am new to this and can use all the help I can get.

Thanks in advance

Makes sense if you're sweating a lot in the Texas heat that you'd crave salty. Something like a peanut and oat type bar (check the carbs on it but they probably have Atkins low carb bars like that) would be a portable snack with a little bit of salty to it, some protein and some carbs - with the amount of exertion you're probably getting (along with stress levels), you likely need more carbs than I do sitting at a desk. As to a Gatorade-like beverage, you might look for a sugar free Gatorade product.

Also, make sure your supervisor and your partner KNOW about the situation and what to do in case you get involved in something and have a sudden glucose drop - that can cause you to pass right out cold or muddle your thinking and coordination (not good for a police officer particularly).

There is something that you should think about carefully about your snacks.

Wise advice - also, for some (like me) NutraSweet can cause headaches (near migraine like nasty things) so trying out new foods when you've got time to deal with potential repercussions is a good idea.

Well it isn't the perfect solution but Gatorade just launched a product called G2 it is a low calorie drink and is lower in sugar/carbs.

I have tried the G2 Gatorade, it is very strong in taste so I did water it down.
