I had a reaction to my diabetic medicine it is called Glyburide/Metformin. I was weak all over my body and my stomach cramped really bad. I also had bad headache. The amount is 5/500Mgs. I want know if any one is taking this medicine on here and does it give you bad side effects? I think am allergic to the Metformin.

Christine,

This is a common combination of drugs. How long have you been on the combination? You may have told me this before but I have forgotten. There usually isn't as much of a reaction to the metformin in combination than there is taken by itself. I think this is because usually you are on a lower dose. Metformin causes gastric upsets but they usually subside after a week or two.

Plus out here in California there is a gastric virus going around which is making people medium sick and this may be occurring where you live also.

Do watch your blood sugars carefully and do report any under 80 and over 400 to your phsyician.

If you are new to this disease, you may need to question the 'sugar free' things that we all tend to try at first.

Ok I have had Type Two Diabetes since 2003 to 2007 and I have been taking Glyburide/Metformin for one year. The dose is 5/500. I have also had took Metformin by its self 2002 for irregular period and did not have type two diabetes then ok.

Christina,

It is possible that you are reacting to the medication as you have been on it for quite a while and could have developed a reaction to it. In this case I would talk to my physician to see what s/he thought and follow their directions.

Now there are other meds on the market that you can take if you can't tolerate the metformin but most of them don't have the weight loss side effect that metformin has. You can talk to your doctor about Januvia or Byetta, which are two new drugs on the market and can be used in combination with metformin or in place of it.
