Alcohol helping Diabetics?
| Sat, 11-10-2007 - 3:21pm |
I read in a magazine recently that one or two drinks a day actually helps stabolize blood sugar. What are everyone's thoughts about this? As a diabetic, I have always stayed away from alohol. I will have a glass of wine with dinner about four times a year, that's it. But according to this article, a couple drinks a day is good for us. Huh?
Any thoughts?

Misty,
To some extent this is a huge area of controversy. Some say that wine in moderate amounts is fine for type 2 diabetics and others say no way. Most of our medications are marked not to be taken with alcohol. And for diabetics on insulin it is a no-no. Alcohol causes the diabetic to use up their insulin quicker and can cause real problems for insulin dependent diabetics.
Not only that but 4 ounces of red wine has as many carbs as an apple and so if the diabetic is going to have an alcoholic beverage they need to plan for it in their meal plan. Not only that but alcoholic beverages taken regularly lead to weight gain and that isn't good for most of us.
So your idea of having a little bit of something alcoholic for very special occasions is the way to go in my humble opinion.
