When is the best time to test?

I am confused about when is the best time for me to check my sugar?
I get up at 3:30 AM to go to work so I usually test between then and 4 AM because I eat at 4 AM (4 days a week). I eat lunch (at work) about 10:30 AM and dinner between 5 & 6 PM. I don't allow myself to eat again until breakfast. Three days a week I test at about 7 AM when I get up. (I work 10 hour days/4 days a week)
I have noticed that my sugar count is up on the days I test later in the AM even though I follow my same routine.
Since I test once a day, when is the best time to test?

What
It's possible that if you're one of the folks with the 'dawn patrol' situation - a glucose dump around 4 am from your liver, that testing at 3:30ish is just early enough to be before that which would show a lower reading than the later time after your body's dumped some glucose into the mix.
Hard as it might be, I'd suggest keeping your routine the same every day (including getting up and eating at around the same time). I love to sleep in on Saturdays and holidays but even my 9 yr old DS knows to make sure Mommy gets up and eats by around 7 am no matter how much I gripe about not getting to sleep late on a day off.

Thanks.
You could (if you wanted, if it works for you) move one of those fruits or veggies to later in the evening - make it a crunchy something so it's kind of "active" KWIM? I tend to want something smooth and fatty in the evenings - ice cream used to be a favorite evening snack but that's pretty much out. So, I've found that 1/2 cup Greek yogurt with 1 teaspoon of agave nectar and a generous sprinkle of cinnamon makes a creamy smooth snack that's only about 10 carbs and has that lovely cinnamon in it.
Or, can you get some sort of handwork to do - something to occupy your mind and hands whether it's knitting or writing a novel - this is NaNoWriMo BTW - National Novel Writing Month - write a 50000 word novel in 30 days. That'll fill in the time between dinner and sleep!
