I was so scared!!

Ok, so I've been doing really well at watching my carbs for the past few weeks, and then today, I went out with my son to see Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Stupid me, I figured, "What's the harm...just a small popcorn won't hurt anything", so I got a small popcorn for myself and one for my son, and a diet coke for myself (water for him), and we went in. About one hour into the movie, I had finished my small popcorn, which was a good sized bag, and then it happened. The room started to spin. My head went all tingly, and my vision got a little fuzzy. I felt my pulse increase, and I could feel my heart beating harder and harder. I looked down at my hands, and they were shaking. I leaned over to my son and whispered, "I don't feel so good right now...", to which he responded, "Tummy ache?", and I said, "No, dizzy....very very dizzy...", which had him scared, naturally, because the poor kid is only 9 years old. I tried putting my head down between my knees, which is what I thought I was supposed to do for a dizzy spell, but everything got worse, and I thought, "Oh God NO....I'm going to pass out here in a dark theater and my son won't know what to do! If I go to the hospital, what will happen to HIM!?!" My husband is in Nashville, and I'm down here in Boca Raton, FL, and we just moved here and know almost no one that I'd trust with my son. I finally figured that I'd have to go to where it was well-lit and where people would see me if I passed out. I was so scared. I was feeling so "off" that I was scared that I might die. Maybe that sounds silly, but it was really that scary to me. I walked outside the theater into the sunlight and stood there....still dizzy, heart pounding, hands shaking, and trying my best to look calm for my son's sake. I told him I couldn't drive, so we'd just wait where we were until I felt better. So that's what we did...for about 20 minutes or so until I felt it was safe enough to drive the five minutes back to my house. I apologized to my son and told him I'd take him back to the movies to see the movie again so we could see how it ended. I just had to get out of the theater at that moment, and I felt so bad about that. We'd both been wanting to see this movie for so long. When I got home, I went right in and checked my blood sugar, and it was 174. Oh my gosh....my sugars had been doing sooo good...98, 97, etc. This one bag of popcorn caused this much trouble?!?
I'm not on insulin, so I just quickly got a pitcher of water and started drinking it. I'm going to the bathroom like crazy, but my level is going down now. It was 174 when I finally made it home (about 30 minutes after I started feeling bad) which makes me really wonder how high it was when I was sitting in that theater and feeling like I was going to pass out, and now it's been 90 minutes, and I'm down to 158. I'm not as shaky, and my pulse has calmed down, but the tingly/fuzzy feeling in my head is still there, although not nearly as bad, thank goodness!
No more popcorn for me. Man, that was scary. I know my sugar could have been a lot higher than it was, but it still felt awful and rotten.
Are there any other ways to help it come down other than water and time (and insulin which I don't have since I was controlling things with diet...until today's cheat :-/)
Thanks!
Patty

We're 'stacking the deck' so to speak for the holiday season. Thanksgiving is at our house so instead of mashed white potatoes and candied sweet potatoes we're roasting up some sweet potatoes, beets, and squashes. Instead of gobs of stuffing we're rolling cod fillets around the stuffing so that it's only a tablespoon or two per serving. And, we're lacing the pumpkin soup with cinnamon to help with controlling glucose levels. Plus, since it's at our house, when everyone else grabs the pumpkin pie, I'm already planning to grab some of my cinnamon laced Greek yogurt to snack on (fat free version BTW - 1/2C with 1 tsp agave nectar and cinnamon is < 100 calories, 0 fat, and < 10 carbs and has a very rich creamy "fatty" texture that is wonderful).
For events at other locations, we also 'stack the deck' by making sure we bring something I know I can have to munch on fairly safely - that way I don't feel like I have to skip all the yummy stuff or settle for out of control days. I can snack on stuff that I already know. It also helps that we know several other diabetics so there's usually some good stuff that they bring as well.
Oh, and I'm making sure to get in my 30 minutes of walking no matter what - it is really helping to keep things more stable now that I'm getting that in at least 5 days per week.

Your menu sounds wonderful! Do you have a recipe you could post for the cod fillets wrapped around the stuffing? That sounds so yummy! What type of stuffing do you use? Homemade or a mix?
I like your idea of bringing something to a party that you know you can eat. I plan to do that for my son's karate school party (combined Christmas, Hannukah, Kwanzaa, and just plain winter season party for those who don't celebrate one of the earlier mentioned holidays. :-D). It's our first time going, since we just moved to this area, but from what I've heard, it's a big party for all the families, and there's music, dancing, karaoke, games, etc...and a potluck type of meal. I have no idea what people are bringing, and it's hard to tell if it's high-carb unless you can visibly see pasta or rice in it. LOL! So I'm going to bring something (an entree type of item and a dessert item) so I know I'll be able to eat something while I'm there.
Hi

Hi and welcome to the board!
Hi Ierenee,
Welcome to the diabetes board. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.
First off, please tell me what country you live in. I know you don't live in the USA because you use the other system of measurement.
A 17 blood sugar is way too high. You need to tell me how you have been told to treat your diabetes. In the US if your blood sugar is above 400, which I think is 21 in your reporting system, you need to seek emergency care. 6 in your system is considered optimum which is 126 in the system that I use.
If your blood sugar is this level tomorrow (Christmas Day) I would call your physician. If it is higher I would go to the local emergency room.
Please don't worry about how you ask your questions or make your comments. If we don't understand we will let you know and please let us know if you don't understand what we say.
Please have a happy day tomorrow and I hope that your blood sugar is down closer to normal.
Hi,
She is using the other reporting system for blood sugar values. To understand her values you need to multiply her number times
hi
oh ok thank you for the infor I just new that 17 is bad .and that she should go to the E.R or call her doc .
i hope you have a very merry christmass and injoy your day ...
Thank you Mary Frances for your very prompt and clear reply.
What a wonderful site.
My sugar level was 14 today (down from the 17 mentioned in my first enquiry)
Today the meter showed a low battery sign and I am wondering whether this could have put my readings so high. I will do a reading tomorrow again and see.
Thank you for being there.
Yours faithfully
Irene Ridgeway. From ENGLAND
Dear Cheryl
Thank you so much for taking the time to give a clear answer.
I live in England. My level this morning was 14 so it is down.
I took it before eating and drinking.
My meter showed a battery low sign and have now purchased a new battery. I am wondering whether that gave the unusually high readings. We will see tomorrow.
Thank you again for being on this site.
Yours faithfully
Irene Ridgeway
