I was so scared!!

Ok, so I've been doing really well at watching my carbs for the past few weeks, and then today, I went out with my son to see Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium. Stupid me, I figured, "What's the harm...just a small popcorn won't hurt anything", so I got a small popcorn for myself and one for my son, and a diet coke for myself (water for him), and we went in. About one hour into the movie, I had finished my small popcorn, which was a good sized bag, and then it happened. The room started to spin. My head went all tingly, and my vision got a little fuzzy. I felt my pulse increase, and I could feel my heart beating harder and harder. I looked down at my hands, and they were shaking. I leaned over to my son and whispered, "I don't feel so good right now...", to which he responded, "Tummy ache?", and I said, "No, dizzy....very very dizzy...", which had him scared, naturally, because the poor kid is only 9 years old. I tried putting my head down between my knees, which is what I thought I was supposed to do for a dizzy spell, but everything got worse, and I thought, "Oh God NO....I'm going to pass out here in a dark theater and my son won't know what to do! If I go to the hospital, what will happen to HIM!?!" My husband is in Nashville, and I'm down here in Boca Raton, FL, and we just moved here and know almost no one that I'd trust with my son. I finally figured that I'd have to go to where it was well-lit and where people would see me if I passed out. I was so scared. I was feeling so "off" that I was scared that I might die. Maybe that sounds silly, but it was really that scary to me. I walked outside the theater into the sunlight and stood there....still dizzy, heart pounding, hands shaking, and trying my best to look calm for my son's sake. I told him I couldn't drive, so we'd just wait where we were until I felt better. So that's what we did...for about 20 minutes or so until I felt it was safe enough to drive the five minutes back to my house. I apologized to my son and told him I'd take him back to the movies to see the movie again so we could see how it ended. I just had to get out of the theater at that moment, and I felt so bad about that. We'd both been wanting to see this movie for so long. When I got home, I went right in and checked my blood sugar, and it was 174. Oh my gosh....my sugars had been doing sooo good...98, 97, etc. This one bag of popcorn caused this much trouble?!?

I'm not on insulin, so I just quickly got a pitcher of water and started drinking it. I'm going to the bathroom like crazy, but my level is going down now. It was 174 when I finally made it home (about 30 minutes after I started feeling bad) which makes me really wonder how high it was when I was sitting in that theater and feeling like I was going to pass out, and now it's been 90 minutes, and I'm down to 158. I'm not as shaky, and my pulse has calmed down, but the tingly/fuzzy feeling in my head is still there, although not nearly as bad, thank goodness!

No more popcorn for me. Man, that was scary. I know my sugar could have been a lot higher than it was, but it still felt awful and rotten.

Are there any other ways to help it come down other than water and time (and insulin which I don't have since I was controlling things with diet...until today's cheat :-/)

Thanks!

Patty

Thanks ivmy2boys for your reply.

My level is dropping. 14 today.

Bought a new battery as this morning the meter said LOW BATTERY.

Perhaps this has been the reason for my readings going up and up.

Will test again tomorrow using the new battery.

Thanks for being there.

Yours faithfully

it was really simple - we used a packaged bread stuffing (pepperidge farms - I think it's called Country style, it's got a teal/green color on the package, not the yellow corn bread or the dark blue) and used just broth, no butter (to cut the fat content). We added diced celery, carrot, onion, and apple (I usually add sweet Italian sausage meat but we skipped that this year, it doesn't go as well with fish as it does with a turkey). Then we put maybe a tablespoon of the stuffing on one end of the cod filet and rolled it up, securing it with toothpicks. Baked it at whatever temp and time it said in the cookbook for cooking cod. Then I melted some butter and added lemon juice as a "gravy" for those who wanted it. This was a way to compromised between having "stuffing" and creating a self-limiting portion - yeah, it was white bread stuffing but 1 tbl was nowhere near what is typical when you're spooning it out of the turkey.

Deb,

I recently got some almond meal at Trader Joe's. It said that you could use it in place of flour. I did note that it has 5 grams of carbs for 1/4 cup which isn't very many carbs. Anyway I got some Telapia filets because hubby and I both like this fish. I dusted with the almond meal and lightly sauted them in some olive oil. My were they tasty!! I am not a big fish eater and these tasted soooooo good.

I liked it so much I am going to try it again.

Sounds yummy to coat it with the almond meal - we didn't bread the cod at all, just the spoonful of stuffing inside and that was it. We like tilapia also and considered it for our Thanksgiving but it was more expensive than the cod. If it was just us (me, DH, DS), I might've gone with it but for extra people, it started getting way expensive as it was to get good cod filets much less the tilapia.

Deb,

I love cod fish but we don't get it here on the west coast because it has been so over fished. When I go traveling where cod is plentiful I always eat it. It is the fish that I grew up with. I was a little concerned about eating the tilapia because it was farm raised and that is an environmental disaster waiting to happen. It is tough balancing all this! I am trying to be a good steward of both my health and the world I live in.

Yeah it is a tough balance in all sorts of ways - do you go for the farm raised fish, with the runoff chemicals and such involved or do you go for the wild caught fish, with the potential depletion of wild populations due to overfishing of 'popular' species?

As far as cod, it's pretty easy around here since we're only about 2 hrs from Cape COD lol. When we lived in Oklahoma, I *never* had fish - at best, restaurants and such had stuff that was frozen and shipped (except the catfish, which was locally farm raised and all but catfish is not on my favorites list - I'm not fond of bottom feeders). One time, we were in Vermont and went out to dinner. I had to wait quite a while (they comp'ed the soft drinks and appetizer while we waited) because the broiled salmon I ordered hadn't arrived yet - it was in the ocean that morning and was on it's way from the coast (admittedly we were a tad early for dinner). That was -fresh- fish.
