Un-Supportive Spouse

Does anyone else have a spouse that is less than supportive?  Mine gets mad when I say anything about my diabetes.  He thinks there is nothing wrong with me, and that I don't need all my meds, I don't need to see doctors as often as I do.  Which is less than the recommended every 3 months.  He thinks my doctor over medicates and doesn't know what she's talking about.

This morning I started watching a segment on the "Today Show" about diabetes, and he got mad that I wanted to watch it.  He said there was nothing they could tell me I didn't already know, and that if people would stop being lazy pigs they wouldn't have diabetes.

These things really hurt me, but this has always been his attitude.  I watched my mom die about 2 1/2 years ago due to complications of diabetes, and smoking.  My 17 year old niece is on the verge of having full blown diabests also.  His own aunt died of it, and he has two uncles that are facing amputation.

I just wondered if anyone else has this problem?

I am so sorry. I know how you feel. Although I don't have diabetes and I am new to all of this as my DH was just diagnosed this week, I do feel the hurt

I wonder if he is also afraid to learn more about it.

Misty,

I am sorry this is happening to you. I know how support and help that you need. My husband supports me and I support him.

My only advise to you is to the very best that you can for yourself and take the best care of yourself that you can. If you need a medication or a doctor's appointment I hope you will follow through with what you need regardless of what he has to say. No one deserves to get diabetes regardless of how little care we take of ourselves. The important thing is to do what you need to do to be a healthy for Hannah and yourself as you can.

I also hope that you are establishing good health habits for Hannah because with the family history that is present on both sides of her family she is at a huge risk of getting diabetes. Make sure she eats wholesome food and isn't sedentary. Exercise is so important to our children when they are young. They are developing good habits, and healthy heart and lungs.

Please come back here and understand that we are here to support you as much as we can.

A gentle hug,
