Hi everyone! Just today I was diagnosed as Type II. I was afraid this was coming, as my symptoms were classic for the last 2 weeks. I start my education class next week and will get my meter and instructions, etc, over the next few weeks. Luckily my insurance covers the education part.

My doc put me on Metformin, so I took my first one tonight at dinner. I know I can do exercise to help me lose weight, but I'm not sure how well I will do with the eating thing. I hope to learn more about this carb counting, maybe that will help with both the levels and the weight. I am a big potato/pasta and bread fan, white only, so that will take some time to get used to.

My weight isn't too bad really. I'm at about 180 so I know I need to lose some, I'd be happy losing 20 (that should be at least one pants size, right?!). We do belong to our park district gym so I just have to learn to schedule in time there every week.

I will definitely bring my questions here. I also have a teen dd, who is overweight (not bad) but could benefit now from my experience I think. Maybe we can prevent this in her later in life.

Hi Gayle,

Welcome to the diabetes board. I am sorry you have needed to join us but I am glad we are here for you. My name is Mary Frances and I am one of the community leaders for this board. I am a type 2 diabetic and a registered nurse. Any advise I may give is not a substitute for seeking medical advise from a health care practitioner of your choice.

It seems that you are on the right tract. We are here to support you on your journey. I do have one piece of advise. Start the metformin slowly and take it after you eat. You need food in your tummy so that it doesn't cause the gastric upset that it is famous for. It also takes your system about two weeks to get used to the metformin so hang in there. Things will get better.

Please pull up a chair and join our conversation. We celebrate successes, lament failures and give gentle shoves when necessary.
