Disposing Insulin

I take low dosage of insulin but my doctor and I have read that you should toss out the insulin after 28 days from opening. If I do this, I'm throwing away half of my humalog and Lantis. This seems wasteful to me plus having to buy more frequently. Why don't they make insulin in smaller amounts for those who can't use a whole bottle of insulin by 28 days?

Hi and welcome to the board.
I asked the same question when I started on Lantus. Seems it costs more to make the smaller vials because the larger vials are usually enough for everyone and so some people would be needing two vials if they were on a larger dose.
I have no way of knowing if this is really true or not but someone stayed up nights to think this out!!
Otherwise how are you doing?
