Diabetes Increases Colorectal Cancer Risk for Women
December - 11 - 2007
New research suggests that women with diabetes are at an increased risk for colorectal cancer, compared to women who do not have diabetes. The findings, presented at the American Association for Cancer Research's Sixth Annual International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, found that women with diabetes are 1.5 times more likely to develop colorectal cancer than other women. "We are just now beginning to understand the role of insulin in the increased risk of many cancers," said Dr. Andrew Flood, the study's lead author and an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. The researchers studied data from the Breast Cancer Demonstration Project, a large-scale cancer screening study from the 1970s and followed the records of over 45,000 female participants to see how many developed colorectal cancer later on

Cheryl,
For some reason Diabetes increases a lot of things. I was reading yesterday about the incidence of frozen shoulder in women and diabetics. About 20% of the people who get this diagnosis are diabetics and it occurs most frequently in women. They have no idea why and the report said that it isn't being diagnosed early enough or treated early enough to prevent complications. I can understand this since I have had it in both shoulders and don't have full range of motion in either one now.
Not fair since I work so hard to keep my diabetes under control!
When my shoulder froze, the orthopedic surgeon said it was diabetes... I said, I have never been out of control.
