HI all! I have been an ivillage member for about 3 years now. But Im new to this particular board. Im really writing for my mom. She just found out she is in the pre 2 diabetes stage. She doesnt really use the computer much so I am trying to gather some info for her. She said her Dr didnt give her very much info on foods she can eat and food she can not...? My mom loves her peanut butter sandwich on whole wheat bread for lunch and the Dr said she cant do that anymore..? Isnt peanut butter kind of good for you in a way??? Anyway I was hoping to get some suggestions on some foods for her. She will get a nutrionist at some point, but until then she really doesnt know much. Thanks you all in advance!! Oh also she usually eats fruit before bed and was told not to do that as well...? I had gest. diabetes when I was pregnant and had to test my blood 5 times a day as well as give myself insulin. Other than that it doesnt really run in the family...?Maybe one more person...not sure?? Thanks for any advice!

Hi,

I am the other community leader for this board and a type 2 diabetic. Welcome to the board.

I can't understand why your mom can't have her peanut butter sandwich. I eat peanut butter all the time. The serving size is 1 tbsp. She could also have sugar jam if she liked. The idea is balance carbs and protein. Her fruit before bedtime would be better if she had 1/2 an apple and 1 tbsp peanut butter or 1 ounce of cheese. She could even have 1/2 cup of sugar free ice cream with 1/4 cup of slivered almonds.

As Cheryl told you most of us carb count anymore and it is really liberating. There aren't many absolute no's in diabetes anymore. It is certainly better to eat her fruit and not drink it. It is also better if she stays away from the white carbs...white rice, white potatoes, white flour and white sugar. All of them raise the blood equally and almost as quickly. What has really changed for diabetics is the amount that we eat.

Use the advance search on this board and find an article that is attached entitled "Eating to Beat Diabetes". It will give some really good information.

I also suggest that people with diabetes get a good diabetic cookbook, one that has appendixes in the back which list the serving size for foods. Look at the ADA website because they have wonderful cookbooks. www.diabetes.org.

Let me know what you think about these suggestions. I do hope that your mother was given a blood glucose test kit and was told when to test her blood sugar.

THANKS so much to you both! I think the fact that my mom is "pre type 2 diabetic"as she said- I guess meaning her sugar is very high...? I think she must have been at her yearly physical and discovered this ...? Her next appt isnt until April and they didnt give her a monitor..? I am a bit confused as to why not..? THANKS AGAIN! i WILL KEEP U UPDATED!

God Bless

Collins :)
