I am speechless. I have been on Byetta 5 mcgs for a year and a half and my doc wants me to stop taking it. It's the only diabetes med I take. Also, my lipid panel is looking fantastic. My A1C is 5.4 and she feels that is too low to be on medication. She thinks maybe I have just simply gotten it under control.
I asked her if it would be okay for me to take just one shot a day and see how it goes. I am afraid to stop taking it! She agreed that I can try just one shot in the morning.
On my way home I thought...hmm...I could have cake! And then I thought, oh no you don't! Stick with what's worked and I resisted!
BTW, I use the glycemic index to make decisions about which foods to eat and portion control. I also walk for an hour and 1/2 to 2 hours a day. I spend about 40 minutes or more race walking.
It is interesting that since I started taking a low dose BCP (Mircette) to help with peri my blood sugar has been lower.

Hi Amy,
Yes, I think if one still has beta cells to kick start that is what it might do. In animal studies Byetta created new betta cells in animals with diabetes. The hope has been that it would also happen in humans. We have all been waiting for them to finish the research and say if it is in fact true. It sure seems like it's true for some of us. There may come a day when all new type II diabetics are started on Byettta as first line therapy as a way of protecting the pancreas from destruction.
