type 2 and need to quit smoking
| Mon, 01-21-2008 - 10:29am |
Hi! I am type 2, diagnosed last February. I have done good with everything so far, docs always pleased with my numbers, but I desperately need to quit smoking. I managed to cut back to less than half a pack since I was diagnosed, but just cannot seem to quit completely. I have smoked for almost 30 years. I am considering using either Nicorette Gum of something like that, but don't know if it is safe for me to do so. I do know that it is sugarless......Does anyone know anything about this? Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

My dad quit about 25 years ago after smoking for over 40 years (he's now 77). What he did was see a hypnotist about it. He wasn't hypnotized into not smoking. The post hypnotic suggestion was used to help deal with the side effects of withdrawal. The main thing of the therapy was to gradually (it took about 6 weeks) change his behavioral ties/cues to smoking. They started with a list of all the times he smoked - on the phone, while driving, while drinking coffee, etc. One at a time, they removed those associations. So, for instance, the first week, he could smoke whenever he wanted EXCEPT when he was drinking coffee. Not too hard, right? Second week, not when drinking coffee OR when driving. And so on, until, one by one, all the behavioral associations were cut and if he wanted to smoke, he could BUT he had to sit in a chair, not talking, not watching TV, not reading, nothing but sit and smoke. That's just boring (not to mention he was pretty busy most of the time and didn't have time to just sit and smoke). Once those associated behaviors were gone, he stopped and hasn't gone back at all in the 25some years. Whether you see a hypnotist or not, a big key to stopping smoking is to remove the associated behaviors.
