Obesity Surgery Cures Diabetes?
| Wed, 01-23-2008 - 7:35pm |
A new study gives the strongest evidence yet that obesity surgery can cure diabetes.
Patients who had surgery to reduce the size of their stomachs were five times more likely to see their diabetes disappear over the next two years than were patients who had standard diabetes care, according to Australian researchers.
Most of the surgery patients were able to stop taking diabetes drugs and achieve normal blood tests.
What do you think??!

Cindi,
Most people who have gastric surgery, at least initially, lose around 90 pounds and that certainly, in most type 2 diabetics, would "cure" or at least put the disease in remission. The problem is that many people ultimately don't modify their eating and stretch out their stomachs and regain the weight. I have know people who had the surgery done and they had a hard time keeping their blood sugars up much like a hypoglycemic person. It is an interesting thought though.
I was just reading something from the ADA about the $174 billion that diabetes costs nationwide last year.
That's about as much as the conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan and the global war on terrorism combined. It's more than the $150 billion in damage caused by Hurricane Katrina."
This is a sobering thought.
