Metformin question

My girlfirend of over 30 years told me yesterday, she has been diabetic 2 for over 15 years.  Her doctor called her last week, from some report on CNN, he was IMMEDIATELY taking her off metformin.  She wanted me to call my doctor, but since you guys seem to be more in touch, have you heard anything about it?  I'm really getting worried.  This is all I could find.  Maybe doctors have a special news the rest of us don't get

Amy,

I receive email messages, professional variety, from the American Diabetes Association and the Joslin Diabetes Organization every week and neither of them has had anything to say about metformin. I wonder if someone confused the ongoing controversy with Actos and Avandia with Metformin. All of these drugs are used to breakdown insulin resistance. Metformin has been on the market more than 30 years. In my humble opinion, in that length of time any problems with this medication would have been discovered.

But I agree with Cheryl. I don't get my medical news from CNN or the nightly news!

Hi Nancy,

I don't know that there is a combination med with Actos but there is with Avandia. It is called Avandamet. I keep wondering how long this class of meds (Actos and Avandia) are going to remain on the market. The article that Marcella posted is also causing great concern. We may be in for a revolution in the way diabetics are treated. I know that since my husband was so ill with his severe low blood sugar this past fall I am unwilling to keep fighting the hypoglycemia that I was experiencing with all my meds. We will see where my A1C is in March when I have it done again.

I still say a dr should not get their info from CNN or any news organization.

True, you would hope they would get info from technical journals, etc, but am not sure how many they actually do read!!

Although I also get nervous when doctors dont seem to know the latest info either!!

Actually I was upset about a bunch of what the doctors were doing too.
