My girlfirend of over 30 years told me yesterday, she has been diabetic 2 for over 15 years.  Her doctor called her last week, from some report on CNN, he was IMMEDIATELY taking her off metformin.  She wanted me to call my doctor, but since you guys seem to be more in touch, have you heard anything about it?  I'm really getting worried.  This is all I could find.  Maybe doctors have a special news the rest of us don't get

Nancy,

When I ran the physician's office I used to ask patients to bring in all their medications in so I could sort out what they were taking and when and then I asked for all the over the counter medications that they were taking. Many times patients don't think herbals are medications and they don't tell you what they are taking. Some real catastrophes have happened because of this.

We should all keep a list of our current meds in our purses or wallets because in a time of emergency none of us can remember what we are taking or how much. When my husband was in the emergency room they wanted to know what meds he was taking and I didn't know! I didn't think to bring his meds with me or to make a list.

I make a new list on a 3" x 5" card the day before I go to the Dr. and put the date of the appointment at the top of the card.

If your kidneys are failing or you are in your 80's you probably should not take it. I recently was put on it. Doctor should run blood and urine tests after a couple of months just to make sure your kidneys are okay.

From every diabetic magazine article I have read I think most of America is on this medicine. It doesn't cause those low readings.

Laughing she said "very true" and some doctors think that Byetta should be put in the water for diabetics also. The other nice thing about metformin is that for most diabetics it allows them to lose weight easier.

Actually I am still just doing diet and exercise, and not on Metformin.
