What do you do when you are craving somthing you shouldn't have?

  • I have a very small serving and hope to be over it.
  • I substitute something for what I am craving.
  • I just buck it up and say get over it!
  • I try not to dwell on what I am craving.
  • If possible I figure out how to include it in my meal plan.
  • I forbid anyone else around me to have any of it!!
  • I just eat it anyway.
  • I would rather not deny myself something I want this badly.
  • Other...please add your comments

I have been craving pizza and a chocolate milkshake. I have been diabetic 17 years and it has probably be 10-15 years since I had a milkshake. I have been fixating on having a milkshake which of course will be too sweet and after two swallows I won't be able to drink anymore! Maybe I should get a diabetic chocolate beverage and freeze and tell myself that I am having my milkshake!!

The other thing I am craving is pizza. Now I know how much pizza I am supposed to eat and I am sure that won't be enough!!

So far I have resisted my craving but I really want some of these two things. Does this happen to you and how do you handle it?

I try not to dwell on it. I will start crocheting, plastic canvas, or scrapbooking as while doing those things it is hard to eat.

I picked Other because I do several of the things on the list. First, I'll see if there's some space in my meal plan where I can fit a small serving of whatever it is. Then, I'll look to see if there's an okay substitute that'll fit if the first step doesn't. I'll also try to figure out what the craving is "about" - cravings are usually a signal of something needed but how we meet that need doesn't have to be the item we crave. So, I try to meet the need behind the craving with something that is a better choice. And sometimes I just remind myself that it's not my best choice and go *do* something someplace else besides near the kitchen. If I'm having a really hard time getting by it, I'll let DH know that I'm wanting x and it's not my best choice and I'm having a hard time with it. Usually, he's good about helping me find an alternative or getting away from the object of my craving.

I also try to include favorites (like chocolate) on a regular basis in controlled quantities so that I don't feel so 'deprived' and end up over the top with it. A sprinkle of a dozen semi sweet chocolate chips on whole grain cereal for instance works for me (YMMV) - glucose readings stay okay and I feel like I've had my chocolate so I can more easily pass up other chocolate later in the day.

Maybe you could make yourself a very small milkshake using one of those no sugar added or sugar free ice cream's?

Where there is a will, there is a way....to include my cravings in my meal plans.

I voted other - it's a combination of substituting, bucking it up, having it anyway.
