We avoid hydrogenateds as much as possible already - we've even found a non-hydrogenated vegetable shortening for baking (pie crust just isn't the same with oil, not that we're baking a lot of pies anymore). And, yup, it's just one more thing to check on the ingredients. That's one reason we mostly buy ingredients and make stuff at home - we have way more control over what goes into it that way. DH had some standard major brand peanut butter about a year or so ago (at the ILs) and said it tasted like peanut flavored shortening. The stuff we buy has one ingredient: roasted peanuts. No sugar, no added fats, etc. Even DS (9 1/2) knows to look for "hydrogenated" in the ingredients (along with sugar, corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup, etc plus the sodium content and carb amount).
