I have been on metformin since June of 2007 - It upset my stomach for the first 2-3 weeks and now it is fine. I started out taking 1600 mg (800 2x a day) and from June to December lost 20 pounds. I just had no interest in food. The flip side was my A1C went down over time to 6.1. But both my doc and I agreed that I can't just keep losing weight - so he gave me a week vacation from it and then put me back on 500 mg 2x a day. I am steady with my weight now but my bs seem a bit higher. I will have my next A1C at the end of March and see what difference is there.
My weight loss was definitely caused by lack of appetite caused by the metformin.
I am glad you are feeling better but please keep talking to your doctor!
