metformin and pregnant

I had always though that I would be coming off all oral meds and going on insulin when I started TTC but I met with my Diabtes Nurse Practioner today and she said that I should confirm it with my endocrinologist but that she bets she will keep me on metformin at least for part of my pregnancy. I was suprised by that and she said it helps with miscariages.

Has anyone else heard this?

Michelle,

Metformin used to be classified as a Category C medication, along with all the diabetic meds except regular insulin and NPH insulin. But women have been getting pregnant on metformin and the medical doctors have been able to prove that it doesn't do damage to the developing baby and therefore its use during pregnancy has been approved. It is unethical to do a drug study on pregnant women to see if the medication damages their baby. On top of that institutional review organizations or pregnant woman would never approve such a study. Lantus has recently been approved for pregnancies also. So there is more variety in insulin preparations available to pregnant women now.

Metformin is water soluble and therefore doesn't have a long half life in the body. Half life is the length of time that it takes for a person to use up or get rid of medication out of their system.

Hi MaryFrances - Thanks for the advice and information. It is so ironic how I have seen it classified as A B drug in some places and a C drug in others. I have my Preconception visit with my OB next week and I will be sure to ask her what she thinks and let post what her thoughts are. I do trust her. I have been with her for over 10 years as a GYN patient and I know she has delivered many many many successful diabetic pregnancies.

I will let her know what I know and see what her responses is. As long as my A1Cs check out on the 26th we will be good to start trying! I am starting to get excited.
