Recent Bloodwork

I saw the endocrinologist on Monday and got the results of my recent blood work. My a1c was 5.8!! Last time it was 6.2 so I am extremely happy with that. My cholesterol was really the only bad thing. My HDL was low at 39 and my LDL was high at 137.
In other news...I have added additional exercise to my daily bike riding. I finally bought a Nintendo Wii over the weekend and must say playing the sports games is very realistic and quite a workout. I have found myself playing the tennis, baseball and boxing for over 2 hours every day. I break a sweat every time I play. Well woth the investment. My friends are hooked too.

Congratulations on your a1c!!!
Yes I am still biking on duty even at night except for when weather keeps me in a car.
Wow!
Excellent A1C - Congrats! Regular exercise will help raise HDL levels (it's one of the few things that can boost that). How are you doing with whole grains in your eating plan? It's hard to balance because while on the one hand, stuff like oats/oatmeal, etc can help lower cholesterol, on the other hand they tend to be more carby (although as long as it's not instant oatmeal, it tends to have a good dose of fiber to help out there). By focusing on limiting animal proteins somewhat (sticking mostly to fish and occasional roasted poultry breast meat, a few ounces of cheese per week, no dairy milk - we prefer almond milk, no red meat at all, no eggs since they cause digestive problems for me unless they're in baked goods which tend to be high in carbs so that's out both ways) and increasing whole grains like oats (in small distributed amounts to minimize glucose impact) and getting most of the proteins from beans (protein, fiber, and carbs seem to balance out pretty well as long as I watch quantity), I dropped my cholesterol big time over the last year - at the last test it was somewhere around 65 HDL and 109 LDL - the LDL is still higher than they like it to be (especially for diabetics) but it had dropped significantly enough that my primary care physician was willing to wait until this next go-round (within the next month) to see where my lipids end up plateauing and then work from there.

You might also be able to get some help from foods with plant sterols.
