My mom was recently put on a 16oo calorie diet as well as a diabetic diet she is 55 years old  151 lbs and aobut 5' 5". the meal plan they gave her is small and has us all confused I was wondering if there is some place where i can get meal plans that would fit her needs. Im trying to figure out how many calories carbs and fats she should be having at eatch meal. she was told wiht the 1600 calorie diet that she only gets one snack in the evening but then the diabetic meal plan they gave her says she needs to have a snack in the morning? I need some information about what she can and cant have in simple terms something like a list of breakfast foods kinda like a pick 1 food from colum one and 2 from the second colum kinda thing that i can send to her she is getting so frustrated and up set over not understanding what they told her and honestly my dad emailed me a couple of the papers the dr gave her and it makes no since the 1600 calorie diet is telling her one thing and the diabetic diet is telling her something totally different. any help or ideas? thanks a bunch

Hi,

Here is an article which will help you understand better what she needs to eat and when. http://health.ivillage.com/diabetesthy/di/0,,pz7h,00.html

It is recommended that diabetics not eat less than 1400 calories per day and some can get by with 1600 calories. Since obestiy is such an issue in diabetes, type 2 almost all of them need to lose weight.

I am not surprised that your mom's lab work was out of line because she had an infection. This can elevate her blood sugar. When she is over the infection she needs to have the baseline lab work done again.

There are problems with the advertised mail away pharmacies on the internet. Some send fake medications and other send medications/ supplies that are out of date. I use a mail away pharmacy but it is connected to my insurance company. I really can't make a recommendation of a mail away pharmacy to use.

Sometimes in smaller communities the best information that you can get comes from a general dietitian. There aren't always dietitians available that specialize in diabetes.

We don't call it a diabetic diet anymore because it is a lifestyle change.

There are very good resouces available on the web at the American diabetes Association web site www.diabetes.org and at the Joslin web site www.joslin.org.

It is really hard to be helpful for your mom when you are so far away. She is just going to need to slow down and figure this out. Unfortunately she needs the most information at the very worst time and that is when she is first diagnosed. If she has access to a computer, ask her to come here and we will do our best to help her.

Please continue to ask your questions. We will help you understand as much as we can.
