Hi Ladies!  My name is Melissa and I'm 34 years old.  I am 32 weeks pregnant and am about 6 weeks away from my scheduled c-section.  I'm in desperate need of some help here.

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes about 3 weeks ago and unfortunately I'm taking insulin shots to TRY to help regulate it.  I say TRY because it seems no matter how much insulin I take, or how closely I follow the diet (I've even cut 1 carb choice out of every meal!)....my numbers are still too high, ESPECIALLY the fasting #'s.  I was told by my OB-GYN, my high risk specialist, AND my diabetic nurse that the only bad thing that can happen with #'s like mine is that my baby can be born weighing 10-11 pounds (yikes!!!!)  Even my best friend's son was 11 lbs. 3 oz. due to GD.  But, IF I can get my numbers under control, that won't be an issue, as I still have 6 weeks left before C-section date.  Good news is, my other friends son was 7 1/2 pounds because she was able to get her #'s down.  Any suggestions?!?!  Thanks soooo much for your time in this manner!

Hi Melissa,

Welcome to the board and congratulations of your pregnancy which is almost to the success date. I am sorry that you received this diagnosis this late in your pregnancy.

It is pretty hard for me to offer much in the way of suggestions because I don't know how much your health care practitioners want you eating or your insulin dosage. The one suggestion that I do have is to try and do some walking to help bring your blood sugar down. I am sure that it is not advisable for you to go to the gym now but usually walking isn't contraindicated. Please ask your physicians before you start.

Unfortunately you have three things to balance now: insulin resistance, food intake, and insulin dosage. Do you know how many units of insulin you are taking per grams of carbs? Sometimes when you are pregnant it takes a lot of insulin, really much more than you think, to bring your blood sugar under control. Remember the requirements for pregnancy are much stricter than for non-pregnant diabetics but you already know the reason this this.

Please let me know what your physicians recommend.
