? about carb counting

I understand the guidelines for carbs in your diet. I have started a new way of eating this morning (not a diet) and I am trying to loose weight as well. I am writing down how many calories as well as how many carbs I am eating. I went to do this this morning and realized that I forgot how to count carbs and I'm not sure if it different.

Do you calculate the total carbs or do you subtract the sugars, etc. like you do for some low carb diets? Thank you!

Angie,

You count all carbs regardless of source. All carbs raise your blood sugar the same amount. What you subtract off is the carbs from fiber and only if it 5 grams or more. This is important because you need to decrease the amount of insulin if you are eating something that is high in non-soluble carbs. (Here is an example: I eat a bread that has 6 grams of carbs per slice and 18 grams of total carbs. For my purposes I am only eating 12 grams of carbs. 18-6=12).

I hope this is helpful. Please let me know if you have more questions.

From what I remember at my meeting with a dietician was:

Just to clarify for my own self, that'd be 150 -grams- of carbs which equals 10 carb "exchanges" (though not all diabetics use the exchange system anymore).

Also, even though someone might be working off 150 grams per day, that doesn't mean you can have 25 grams at breakfast and 25 grams at lunch just so you can have 100 grams at dinner. It needs to be spread out fairly evenly thorughout the day to maintain stable blood sugar.

Hi Barb119,

Welcome to our board! I see you had a name that lots of other people have. That's how I got maryfrances40!

I count carbs and found it to be liberating. Two cups of veggies, which is a heck of a lot of veggies, is worth 5 grams. Most of the time I can't eat that much!

Please pull up a chair and join our conversation. We love having new folks around here.

Hi MaryFrances40, actually my signature should be Barbara1751, I put the wrong number on when I left a message. Sometimes I am on so many sites that I forget what number to use. My dietician told me that I did not have to count veggies that are not starch. So, I can have 2 cups of spinach for example, and not count any carbs.
